Emily’s List, a group that advocates on behalf of Democratic candidates who support abortion rights, will launch a $1 million ad campaign Friday targeting Georgia Republican Senate candidate David Perdue, focusing on a discrimination lawsuit filed by women at a company he ran.
The ad, entitled “Letter,” depicts a woman writing to Mr. Perdue to explain why she wouldn’t vote for him. The ad details the lawsuit’s charges: that Dollar General, the company where Mr. Perdue served as a CEO for four years, paid women less than men for similar positions. It concludes: “David Perdue, it would be simply wrong for you to ever get my vote.”
Mr. Perdue served as CEO of Dollar General from 2003 to 2007. In 2007, more than 2,000 female store managers filed a lawsuit against Dollar General, claiming the company consistently paid male managers more than female ones. Dollar General ultimately paid millions to settle the case in 2011, after Mr. Perdue had left the company.
The ad will run in Atlanta through September and target female swing voters, according to a spokeswoman for Emily’s List.
“David Perdue owes the people an explanation for his shady business history – why he’s killed and outsourced jobs and why his company was at the center of a pay discrimination suit – and most importantly, whether he still believes that women and men should not be paid the same amount for the same job,” said Stephanie Schriock, the group’s president, in a statement. - Wall Street Journal, 8/22/14
Michelle Nunn (D. GA) has been making Equal Pay a key campaign issue. Nunn went after Perdue's record and stances in yesterday's debate funded by the Chamber of Commerce but of course Perdue didn't really want to focus on answering questions:
http://politics.blog.ajc.com/...
Moderated by former WSB-TV anchor John Pruitt, topics covered healthcare, immigration, transportation and the military.
On nearly every topic, Nunn turned her answer toward Perdue, slamming him for “embracing” gridlock and conflict in Washington rather than working for solutions. Perdue, meanwhile, might not have even uttered Nunn’s name, and instead was focused sharply on Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.
“I’ve been very clear about my priorities this entire campaign,” Perdue said, adding that Obamacare must be repealed. “We have to get serious about this outrageous spending.”
Nunn, however, even in her opening statement, questioned Perdue’s strategy.
She said Georgia should elect her to “send someone to Washington to focus on partnership and getting things done. That’s not what I’ve heard from David.” - Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 8/21/14
I also liked that Nunn hit Perdue on this at yesterday's Chamber of Commerce sponsored debate:
http://www.politico.com/...
Nunn attacked Perdue for walking out of an endorsement meeting with the U.S. Chamber after 10 minutes in frustration. She said he blanked when asked during an interview to name an issue on which he could work across the aisle with a Democrat. And she criticized him for saying that the election is about “prosecuting the failed record of the Democratic administration.”
“I don’t think we need more prosecutors,” she said. “I think we need more problem-solvers. We need more collaboration and less conflict.”
Georgia represents a rare pick-up opportunity for Democrats this year. The state is becoming more purple with growing African-American and Hispanic populations.
Democrats are spending heavily to drive up Perdue’s negatives. EMILY’s List announced earlier Thursday that it will spend $1 million over the next month on ads hitting Perdue over a pay-discrimination lawsuit filed against Dollar General.
Nunn herself is running a rough ad that features textile mill workers who got laid off after Perdue was CEO of the Pillowtex. (The company had already declared bankruptcy when Perdue arrived.) - Politico, 8/21/14
If the Chamber of Commerce really wants to get back at Perdue, they should back Nunn. I like the direction she's going in attacking Nunn and I think she needs to keep it up because the female vote could be what helps defeat Perdue. In the mean time, click here to donate and get involved with Nunn's campaign:
