Normally I would be putting out a rescue me diary, however, with the beheadings of two Americans in the Middle East, I thought it might be appropriate to dedicate a diary to good deeds we can do in their name to help us cope with the tragedy of these two men’s deaths and to celebrate their lives. We cannot save them, however, we can do something in their names that they and their families would be proud of.
Esquire Sets Up Paywall to Benefit James Foley Marquette Scholarship Fund
Asks Readers to Pay $2.99 for Single Article
Ahead of the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, Esquire magazine is putting "The Falling Man" -- Tom Junod's 2003 article about the photograph of a man falling from the World Trade Center -- behind an optional paywall and suggesting readers pay $2.99 to read it.
Proceeds will be donated to the James Foley Scholarship Fund at Marquette University. Mr. Foley is one of two American journalists beheaded by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Mr. Junod has written a new introduction that establishes a connection among the photograph, Mr. Foley and Steven Sotloff, the second American journalist killed by ISIS.

I read the Esquire Falling Man article and it is a truly wonderful tribute to these men and the victim who jumped from the towers to his death on 9/11 and really brings home the importance of images to capture events in history and how important it can be to look no matter how difficult that is. I will not watch the video as it is what the people who committed these crimes want and what the families of these men do not want but I agree that we need to be able to look at the still images and be witness to the events they depict.
James Foley's family has their own link to donate to the scholarship fund.
The James Foley Scholarship
To honor his memory the friends and family of James Foley have established a scholarship fund through Marquette University, his alma mater.
The scholarship will provide financial assistance to a communications student who otherwise would be unable to attend Marquette. Additionally, Jim's friends and family will provide a mentoring-type program to help build upon the convictions that drove Jim - the importance of providing a voice for those people whose stories would otherwise go untold.

Steven J. Sotloff Fund to Inspire Journalism and Global Scholarship Established
9/10/2014
Head of School Mike Schafer announced yesterday that the Steven J. Sotloff Fund to Inspire Journalism and Global Scholarship has been established in Steven Sotloff '02's honor. Steven was a journalist who was executed by ISIS i earlier this month.
"Last week in the midst of an unimaginably challenging time for Steven’ Sotloff’s family, I received a phone message from his father, Arthur, with some remarkable news. Steven was able to have several letters smuggled out of his place of captivity late last spring. In one of those correspondences to his family, he wrote that he would like a scholarship fund established at Kimball Union in his name should he not survive. His father told us how grateful they all were for the opportunities he had here, and how much our school meant to him and to them.
"I am honored to announce the establishment of the Steven J. Sotloff Fund to Inspire Journalism and Global Scholarship. Through its creation, the family’s hope is to promote and inspire future generations of Kimball Union students to follow Steven’s passion for global and cultural awareness and journalism. Even in the face of danger, Steven’s courage and desire to tell the world about the plight of the voiceless was nothing short of remarkable. The Fund will enable students to reach beyond their grasp, see the world through different lenses, and commit to using what they learn at KUA to help others and to make the world a better place," said Mike Schafer.
