A biology teacher in NC recently caught some heat for referring to his high school as a "Nazi concentration camp" in a Christian publication. Obviously, comparisons to Nazi concentration camps reflect poorly on those who choose to employ them. I found the news article additionally disturbing because the teacher in question considers himself to be a "local evangelist and public school missionary." Mark my words: if he gets fired (apparently not a foregone conclusion), he'll be riding the victim circuit wailing about being persecuted for being a Christian and having his first amendment rights violated.
The teacher's name is Ray Fournier, and he has "apologized" for referring to his high school as a Nazi concentration camp. I say "apologized," because his apology was mostly an opportunity for him to further discuss "the loss of millions of children from Christian homes to the world (Secular Humanism) as a result of the media, the public school curriculum, and the student culture."
Read the article here.
Here's more of his "apology:"
"It is a fine line to walk for a man trying to speak the truth in a way that would awaken Christian parents without having the method of communication over-shadow the message. Concentration camps and the holocaust are real horrific events of history. Some people might not understand the seriousness of the spiritual destruction of our children and as a result, might come to the conclusion that I am being disrespectful to those families who directly suffered in the holocaust."
Yeah, it's tough out there for Christian dominionists when people don't see that children being influenced by popular culture is the same as millions of people being murdered and incinerated in concentration camp ovens.
And he caps it all off with amazing humility and contrition:
"As a result of my study of God’s Word and the testimony of my experience, I still believe and stand by my convictions regarding having Christian parents rescue their children from the public schools.
The following is what I believe God says regarding the education of our children. Prayerfully examine it in light of the scriptures and let the Holy Spirit and His Word lead you to the right decision regarding your children.
May God bless you and your families!
Ray Fournier"
I really love it that Fournier has managed to hang onto his job thus far. If an atheist or Muslim teacher had publicly referred to him/herself as a "public school missionary," there would be a mob with pitchforks and torches descending on the principal's house from every corner of the United States demanding that teacher be fired, and worse.
If he does end up getting fired, I fully expect him to end up on Fox news talking about the War on Christians and bemoaning the fact that his first amendment rights have been taken away. Hundreds of thousands will be raised so he can sue the public school system. Maybe he will make it all the way to the Supreme Court!!!!!
