A University Student walking in a nature preserve Sunday was fatally attacked by a black bear. This was the first bear caused death of a human in Jersey in more than a century and a half.
New Jersey has a couple thousand bears and a recent history of controversy over hunting as a means of population control.
With any wildlife attack on humans the first thing I look for when reading is feeding and habituation. It doesn't sound like either is the case here. I'm sure there will be follow up stories.

background on hunt controversy
My 2 kip..... Already I read mention of the "was he carrying candy bars" etc. which translates roughly as "was her dress too short". Hunters routinely chase bears off their elk carcasses out here by throwing rocks. Bears, especially black bears, are naturally afraid of humans. That said they are bears. Sometimes they will decide it's time to eat a human. No reason needed.
I purposefully left off the name of the young student. Don't want his family reading any discussion. I'll mind the post for a little while, then back in AM. Link to news story very slow, getting hammered by everyone.
