Nothing says "I love DK" and "I love your writing" at the same time like a Gift Subscription. Enabling your favorite Kossack to use the site without the slow loading and distraction of ads is a blessing that says more than millions of tips and recs. And it helps Daily Kos financially, too, at a time when the site is bombarded with mid-term elections traffic.
But First, A Word From Our Sponsor:
Top Comments recognizes the previous day's Top Mojo and strives to promote each day's outstanding comments through nominations made by Kossacks like you. Please send comments (before 9:30pm ET) by email to topcomments@gmail.com or by our KosMail message board. Just click on the Spinning Top™ to make a submission. While there was a rush to get and give subscriptions when lifetime subscriptions were about to end, there are many new Kossacks that have come on board since then. And some "old" Kossacks who didn't (or couldn't) take advantage at the time.
I was the recipient of a one year subscription (and later a lifetime subscription) at a time when my computer was 7 years old and cranky at best. Also, operating on dial up internet which I later upgraded to cable. You can imagine how long it took for diaries to load even with comments compacted (yes, I opened one at a time). The subscription enabled diaries to open much faster, writing and editing a diary to move along at a decent pace, and for me to be able to read more without waiting for everything to load and the ads to display.
Every time I opened Daily Kos, I thanked those donors (one known to me and the other anonymous). At the time I couldn't afford a subscription. Today, with a Social Security check in addition to my pension, things are better. A newer computer helped a whole lot, too (I don't have to compact or hide comments).
We have many fabulous writers and commenters. Many are operating older and slower computers, many on dial up because they can't get a better connection where they are, and far too many with financial difficulties. You can brighten not just their day, but their entire YEAR with a gift subscription.
To find out if your favorite Kossack has (or needs) a subscription, simply click on their user name in a diary or comment. You'll go to their profile page. Under their name in the upper left hand side of the page, you'll see "Daily Kos member". If there is nothing next to that, they're already a subscriber.
Otherwise, you'll see the words "Give a gift subscription to this user". Click on that, follow the simple instructions, and voila, they're subscribed for a year. Cost $40. You can choose to be listed anonymously if you prefer. They'll be sent a Kosmail informing them of the gift.
Your chosen Kossack will have a year of ad-free Daily Kos. No muss, no fuss, no loading time. They'll be able to zip around the place moving from diary to diary faster than ever. They'll be able to write diaries and comments without ad interference. No distractions, no RW crapola ad bothering them, just 100% Daily Kos goodness. And Daily Kos gets some $$ for site improvement.
You can also buy a subscription for yourself. Just in time for the holidays (elections).
