Welcome again to Saturday Morning Home Repair blogging, where we talk about fixing houses, the things in them that are supposed to work for us, and fixing them up. An ad hoc cadre of building professionals and gifted amateurs attempt to answer questions that arise from readers, and offer encouragement and advice for those inclined to do things for themselves, if they can. We all do a lot of things, collectively, and can probably help out with insights from our vast experience.
Or sometimes, we just gab.
I last did a post on August 8th. At that time I was trying to get inspections for AC, plumbing, electric & framing. Between the 11th & 15th of August the Inspectors were coming by & looking at the work. Tuesday the 12th AC passed. Wednesday the 13th the framing passed. On Friday I was waiting for the Plumbing inspector. He never showed up.
David & I talked about what we should do next, We have talked about the attic space for long time. It need a lot of work to make it a usable room. I didn't take a picture of it ! So....
at the wall in that picture it's 4' from floor to trusses. After lunch I started cutting. By 5:00 pm I had one section mostly cut out.
I continued on Saturday by started the other side of the room.
Then I started making new supports. It had 3 6" 16 gauge studs spaced 5' on center. I decided to put 9 6" 16 gauge studs with a 6" x 1/8 flat strap welded on it back in. worked out to be 22" on center spacing.
I also made 7 lets call them saddles to hold the this new support together.
that piece is 16 gauge also. I drilled 3/8 holes in the 6" x 1/8 flat strap & welded up the hole.
I built the first one Monday afternoon. Did 2 on Tuesday, 3 Wednesday. Thursday and Friday I cut the other 3 sections out Then I started installing them. Saturday I started putting in those beams.
I had to build a new wall.
was fairly easy
Now it's time to install them. It went fairly easy. Adam found a job & I did this myself.
there was a piece of 6" x 1/8 strap bolted on the 3 trusses & I used that strap over. it's painted gray, you can see it in that picture.
the 3 trusses removed. You can also see how I continued the studs in this picture.
now I need to connect the new support at the wall in the center of the building.
so I welded flat strap together & made my own beams.
then I put in 3 rows of connector pieces
I made a jig to weld those
worked good, I didn't need a hammer to install these. they slipped in & I could clamp them & put the screws in.
I redid the stairs into this room also.
you can see the copper line I had in this picture for the drain on the air compressor.
Had to redo the drain for the air compressor also.

the insulation went in
I used wire to hold the ceiling insulation in place.
I made a cutting board to cut the insulation

drywall went up a week ago Thursday.

I had to finish the plumbing in the bathroom & the electric in the shock room. I furred the ceiling in the shock room so I could hide the beam & redo the lights.
I was working 10 to 12 hours a day sometimes to get this far in the last 6 weeks !
:=)
hoping to get an electric inspection in about 2 weeks so the people can come spray the insulation in the inside of the steel paneling.
I still have 5 or 6 big things to get done before the spray operation goes down.
but the place is moving along nicely
