Tip of the hat to Joe.My.God. for highlighting this article at On Top magazine.
Today's bigot-du-jour (Why is there a new one every day? Never mind.) is Jose Maria de la Torre Martin. He's the bishop of the Diocese of Aguascalientes, a free and sovereign state in central Mexico.
As it happens, same-sex marriage is currently legal in Mexico City, and two other states: Quintana Roo, and Coahuila. Other Mexican states have been considering allowing same-sex marriage, some as the result of court cases. For the state of Aguascalientes:
In May, 2014, a male same-sex couple requested an injunction against the Registry in Aguascalientes for refusing to allow them to marry and against the constitutionality of sections 143 and 144 of the Civil Code. The injunction 1015/14 was approved 29 August 2014. A lesbian couple also applied for an amparo in May and received a favorable response 2 September 2014. 1 September 2014 Elizalde Julián Peña, coordinator of the organization, Collective SerGay of Aguascalientes, announced a third injunction had been requested. 3 September 2014, the first same-sex wedding was held in Aguascalientes.
In September, 2014, Cuauhtemoc Escobedo Tejada, legislative member of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) announced that a civil unions bill and possibly a same-sex marriage initiative were to be introduced by the Governor of the state for consideration. Escobeda Tejada further announced that if the Governor did not introduce a bill, the PRD would.
De la Torre is having none of it. According to On Top:
The Catholic bishop claimed this week that allowing gay couples to marry will lead to “allowing a man to marry a dog and they can inherit the puppies".
As far as I can tell, in the jurisdictions around the world that now have legalized gay marriage, none of them endorse or allow a man to marry a dog. Or, for that matter, a woman to marry a dog. Let's be equal, after all. I'm a gay man, and I have no desire to marry a dog or any other beast. Nor do I advocate for the freedom to allow others to do so. Nor do any of the many gay people that I know.
Every time we hear about this nonsense, it seems to be coming from a white, conservative and/or religious straight man. Rick Santorum has his own man on dog thing, while John Cornyn is all about box turtles. I would defy these asshats to specify who, exactly, has been advocating such marriages. I won't ask the question as to why the subject comes up in their minds; I don't want to go into those particular dark corners.
Getting back to de la Torre, and forgive me for this, but his actual words bring up some very strange thoughts, none of which I'm exactly proud of:
If a man were to marry a dog, and there were puppies as a result (oh, don't let me get side-tracked on that), then it follows that the man would be marrying a female dog. Well at least, then, this would be a heterosexual beastiality relationship. Is he sure it's not the straight community that's behind all this? Or maybe the community of straight men who dress up in robes and funny hats?

In Steven D's diary "Unsportmanlike to pray after NFL Touchdown if you are not a Christian", CJB has a very popular opinion for a very brief praise of Allah after a touchdown (when Tebow wasn't penalized for his frequent prayers)
From a2nite:
There were several good comments in this diary by chaunceydevega, "Dear White Folks, Please Stop Being So 'Surprised' When White Cops Shoot Unarmed Black People", yesterday especially from some of our white friends trying to explain to some other kossacks that our complaint about state sanctioned murder of our brothers and sister is valid. By our complaining, it ruins some people's day. This happened today, from eodell:
From your diarist, lotac:
Richard Trumka, well-known labor leader, posted this diary "We Need to Talk About Ferguson". I'm going to highlight a comment by TomP, which contains a partial transcript of Trumka's speech from the video.
