On Thursday morning, Daily Kos and SEIU will be delivering a petition to the Los Angeles World Airports’ Board of Airport Commissioners demanding substantial changes in working conditions to prevent worker deaths due to inadequate safety standards. This is not an ambush the commission action, but a public meeting of the commissioners where the workers plan to pack the house.
I'll be there (Shockwave may be there, too). Will you join me?
If you have the time to make the trip to LAX, please join us as we present those with the power to make those changes with over 48,000 petition signatures.
Clifton A. Moore Administration Building
Los Angeles International Airport
1 World Way, Los Angeles, California 90045
[from SEIU] "The easiest way to get there is to park in P1 (Southwest) parking right when you enter the airport, and then head toward the old control tower, walking in the opposite direction of the "Spider," also known as the "Theme Building" where Encounters restaurant is located. The meeting starts promptly at 10:30, so I would plan to be there at 10:15 in case there are any issues finding the place from parking."
This is the tragic event that inspired that effort, the avoidable death of Cesar Valenzuela https://dailykos.com/....
Steve Simon from SEIU emailed the following about this issue:
.Workers are delivering a petition with over 48 thousand signatures, demanding that the airport authority (Los Angeles World Airports) keep workers safe and hold Menzies Aviation accountable in the death of LAX worker Cesar Valenzuela.
.The petition is from Ulbita Ramirez, Cesar's partner of over 20 years.
.Menzies was cited by Cal/OSHA in August for three "serious accident related" health and safety violations related to the death of their employee Cesar Valenzuela.
.Cal/OSHA said that Menzies practices "led to the death of" Cesar Valenzuela and that his death "could have been prevented with a well thought out and implemented safety plan, as is required for all worksites in California."
.Prior to Cesar Valenzuela's death, Menzies Aviation was cited by Cal/OSHA in a separate inspection (June 2013), where the company was fined almost $95 thousand for a Willful violation as well as Serious violations, which are defined as the type of violation that could lead to serious injury or death. Menzies workers had also come to BOAC before Cesar's death, and alerted the Board to the dangerous conditions at Menzies.
.Daily Kos members should feel free to also speak on this topic during public comment - there is someone stationed at a fold-up table right by the entrance to BOAC chambers, who can help them fill-out cards allowing them to be called to public comment.
