Between this and the epic fail that is the GOP's #IAmARepublican social media campaign, it's clear that conservatives could really use a remedial course in media messaging.
Now, it’s pretty well known that Republican Governor Tom Corbett isn’t very popular here in Pennsylvania, even among Republicans. That being said, tell me if this latest ad doesn’t sound like a concession.
If I were Olivia Pope and was working Corbett’s campaign, I’d find the person responsible for this ad and sic Huck on them (it’s Thursday and I just had to work a SCANDAL reference in).
Throughout this campaign, businessman Tom Wolf has been consistently 15 to 20 points ahead of Corbett in the polls, and the desperation in this ad is pretty obvious, falling back on the tired old GOP trope of "high taxes", and the atmospherics of middle-Americans suffering under the tyranny of “big government” (middle-America in this case being the area of Pennsylvania that exists between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, known around here as Pennsyl-tucky). But the thing that’s horribly wrong with this ad (if you’re Tom Corbett, that is) is that it not only acknowledges that his opponent is beating him, but concedes that Wolf has already won and the race is over, which taken from another angle isn’t necessarily a good thing for Wolf supporters either.
One thing that you can say about Republicans, particularly of the Tea-Party variety, is that they VOTE, consistently, and they vote their party even if they have to hold their nose to do it. Contrast that with Democrats who only seem to find their way to the polls when there’s a president involved, and begin taking victory laps way too early. That’s probably the only reason I would fathom that Corbett would possibly put up an ad like this. To lull Democrat voters into a false sense of victory while he sneaks himself back into the Governor’s mansion. Otherwise, this ad is just as much a loser as the Governor who “approved” it.
