Estimates are that Monsanto and Dow have spent about a million dollars* in tiny Maui county population 154,834 trying to defeat a citizens initiative GMO Moratorium. (Hawaii is ground zero for GMO/Pesticide experimentation.) That's $12 for each of the 85,000 registered voters. Spending is through their front group, Citizens Against the Maui Farming Ban, headed by the manager of Dow's Mycrogen operation.
A counter PAC called Maui United has been newly formed to advocate for a yes vote on the GMO Moratorium that will be on the ballot in November.
Maui United's name expresses their desire to air the truth and unite the residents of Maui instead of creating misinformation and dissension as Monsanto & Dow are doing.
But the United Way charitable giving group has sent Maui United a cease and desist notice threatening a lawsuit if they don't remove "United" from their name by today.
This has spawned numerous facebook threads mocking United Way and asking if they are going to sue Maui United Soccer, Unite Here (union), the United States, and even the United Federation of Planets.
Speculation that the big donation Monsanto gave United Way might explain why Maui United was singled out for legal action.
*This is an estimate since their front group, "Citizens Against the Maui Farming Ban" did not file their requisite campaign spending notices at the end of September. The sum of September's TV ads for just the four broadcast stations out of the many stations running pro-GMO ads exceeded half a million dollars and they've been running print ads, sending expensive mailers, running ads on cable networks, running radio ads and paying people to go door to door.
