Republican Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett continues to trail his Democratic opponent by double-digit margins a month before the general election, according to a poll released Tuesday by Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.
Corbett trails Democrat Tom Wolf by 17 percentage points with support from 38 percent of likely voters, the poll showed, compared to 55 percent who favor Wolf.
"It's a matter of simple math and the ticking clock and both are working against Corbett," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
Corbett lacks the support of 22 percent of Republicans, the lowest rate of support from his own party by any incumbent governor.
Wolf, a businessman who poured his personal fortune into a four-way race for the Democratic nomination came out early with a series of autobiographical ads that touted his work as a Peace Corp volunteer.
He has pledged to levy a tax on natural gas drillers to fund shortfalls in the state's education budget.

But hey, it wasn't all bad news for Corbett:

The survey shows a slight improvement for Corbett compared to the last Quinnipiac Poll of the race Sept. 11, when Wolf led 59 percent to 35 percent among likely voters.
“With a slight shift in the numbers as a handful of Republicans come back, there is a pinprick of light at the end of the long, dark reelection tunnel, but time is not on Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett’s side,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the poll. “It’s a matter of simple math.”
Republicans back Corbett 75 to 22 percent, one of the lowest rates of same-party support for an incumbent governor in any of the nine states surveyed by Quinnipiac University. That’s an improvement over last month, when Corbett led 66 to 28 percent among GOP voters. - Philadelphia Inquirer, 10/7/14
The survey is based on live interviews with 907 likely voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points. The only person who's convinced Corbett still has a chance is this guy:

Gov. Chris Christie is stepping up his support for neighboring Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett’s uphill fight for reelection.
Christie, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, is slated to attend two Corbett campaign events on Thursday. The governor will headline a GOP rally with Corbett and then head off to a Corbett for governor event.
Corbett is trailing in the polls by double digits against Democratic challenger Tom Wolf.

Wolf is not taking this race for granted and is reaching out to every voter:

On an overcast October day when few people visited the usually bustling Market Square, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Wolf campaigned undeterred to about a dozen potential voters.
Meeting constituents, he said Monday, has been one of the high points in the campaign.
“The key in a democracy is that you're not just selling yourself,” said Wolf, 65, of Mt. Wolf. “You're actually finding out what people care about.”
Less than a month before the general election and leading Republican Gov. Tom Corbett by double digits in the polls, Wolf appeared composed and on-message during a 20-minute walk and eight-minute question-and-answer session with reporters. Frances Wolf, Tom's wife of 39 years, accompanied him and shook hands, smiling, at his side.
The itinerary did not go as planned on two fronts. A cold drizzle cast a pall on the public space that, in fairer weather, has no empty seats at its wrought-iron tables. And Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, who accompanied the tour, said initial plans for this week optimistically involved a Pirates playoff game.
Wolf spoke to restaurant staff at Il Pizzaiolo and diners at Primanti Brothers, which included a pair of visitors from Texas. Optimistic Wolf supporter William Hicks, 62, from the South Side made a point to talk to Wolf while returning to his car parked in Market Square.
“I'd like to shake the hand of the next governor,” Hicks said. He said he supports Wolf's plan to institute a 5 percent severance tax on Marcellus shale gas producers and increase education funding, a proposal he saw in television ads. - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, 10/6/14
We are going to beat Corbett but getting a high voter turnout could also help us take back the State Senate and even win some congressional races.
