Republicans just don't take NO for an answer.
The Voter ID Law in Wisconsin was blocked late last night by the US Supreme Court, but JB Van Hollen, Wisconsins Republican Attorney General is still scheming to put it in place for the November 4 mid term election.
The 6-3 vote means in all likelihood the requirement to show ID at the polls will not be in effect for the election. But Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said he would seek ways to reinstate the law within the month.
But Van Hollen said his office "will be exploring alternatives to address the court's concern and have voter ID on election day."
"I believe the voter ID law is constitutional, and nothing in the court's order suggests otherwise," the second-term Republican said in his statement.
Van Hollen knows that the gerrymandering Republicans rammed through doesn't help statewide elections. In 2012 he saw Wisconsin vote for Barack Obama by a margin of 6 points and elect Tammy Baldwin to the US Senate. All that gerrymandering only helps them pack Republican butts into seats in the State Legislature and House of Representatives.
To win statewide, they need to stop Democratic voters from the ballot box and that's where all their voter oppression laws came in.
They'll do anything to steal an election win.
They've cut early voting from 3 weeks (with evening hours at the discretion of local clerks) and 2 weekends down to 2 weeks (with evening hours prohibited) and NO weekends. That will cut down on all those working people voting.
They've insisted that all voters sign the poll book and our squiggly signatures attempted with a large binder held in the air for us by poll workers attests to how "important" those signatures are. But, that too serves the purpose of slowing up the processing of voters and making voter lines longer. Maybe more folks get discouraged and leave because their kids are at home waiting for supper.
They've reduced the personal space of voters down to 3 feet - close enough for "poll watchers" to hear voters give their name and address to poll workers. Also close enough for "poll watchers" to breathe down the necks and intimidate any voters they may not approve of.
But Voter ID, restricting "approved" IDs to a very tiny list, was their key to obstructing voters. The worst part, however, is that most of those IDs (except passports and drivers licenses) will need to be renewed every 2 years and that will have impacts on voting rights long into the future even for those with Voter ID.
Ruling to block the voter ID law for this election were Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, Anthony Kennedy and Sonia Sotomayor.
Dissenting were Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas.
Those in the majority did not explain their rationale.
Scott Walker must be crapping his pants. I'm sure he was counting on stopping people from voting as his key to re-election.
I've got a good deal for Scott Walker. Let's make sure he loses the election on November 4 so he can focus 100% of his attention on his Presidential ambitions without having a real job to ignore as he has for over 3 years. Deal? Deal!
And Wisconsin will be better off for it, too. God only knows how long it's going to take to undo the damage that's been done already.
And the Voter ID Law is still on the books. It's on hold until the Supremes decide whether or not to take up the case. We still have a lot of work to do, but at least it won't be in effect for this election.
Solidarity.
