The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note any observations you have made of the world around you. Rain, sun, wind...insects, birds, flowers...meteorites, rocks...seasonal changes...all are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.
October 2014
Salish Sea, PNW
Dense fog has settled and drifted around the islands for the past week. Lifting momentarily then enveloping us again in soft shades of grey. Features fade in the distance. Foghorns boom intermittently somewhere out there. Dim light...prickly damp...flat calm...muffled quiet.
Close by, I see movement...birds flying over the water.
(All photos by me. In Lightbox...click to enlarge)
Killdeer across the surface, quick flashes of color.
A mink paddles soundlessly out to a rock that's an island at high tide, shared for the moment with a heron.
Flat calm, slack tide...is that a hint of blue through the grey?
Only for a moment. But the wildlife seems to have no trouble navigating the fog. Kayaking across the bay is iffy for me though. I can just see Mr O at the boat, ready to return to shore. Better for us to stay on shore.

It's been very foggy in the islands, now shifting to rain. Fall has arrived in the Pacific Northwest.
And where you live? This late Bucket is now open for your observations of the day.
