Democrats in North Carolina's freshly gerrymandered sixth Congressional district are rooting for Laura Fjeld in her campaign against fellow political newcomer, former Baptist preacher, and batshit crazy tea partier, Mark Walker [R], to fill the seat of retiring Howard Coble [R]. Laura's opponent, Walker, recently achieved fifteen minutes of fame beyond the borders of NC-06 when DKos' own Hunter called attention to a previously unnoticed YouTube video in which Walker supports the idea of "starting up a little war with Mexico" over undocumented immigration.
But some Fjeld supporters, such as myself, have been sweating bullets lately, wondering if and when Laura would come out swinging against Walker. The retail politics of face-to-face meeting with voters at lunch counters, community centers and workplaces (which Laura has been diligently pursuing) is important, but in a district with a million inhabitants so too are TV and radio ads, mailings, and even lawn signs...things that have been notoriously absent for much of this campaign.
But no more. Fjeld's campaign has just come out with a powerful TV ad, rightly branding Walker "too extreme for North Carolina" and taking him to task for his threats against Mexico and his no-exceptions opposition to abortion and even birth control.
Laura's fighting an uphill battle here; much of this district is rural, with its share of good ole boys and more than a few Southern Baptists like Walker. But it's not an impossible battle, given the liberal bedroom communities for Duke and Wake Forest universities also found here. With Laura now fighting hard, we can win this thing (and thereby flip a House seat) - provided that progressives back her up with the dollars it takes to pay for a first-class media campaign.
