I work and live in a red state. There are two, possible three, issues on which I get 100 percent agreement with those who range from wing nuts to old-fashioned Republicans.
1. Fracking. No one likes it. No one wants to buy a house and then find out that some oil company has the right to foul their land and water. Yes, this has to do with property rights...which will trump "personhood" and abortion 9 times out of 10 (maybe 10 out of 10...never had anyone choose abortion rights over fracking) because it hits people's pocketbooks. "Would you vote for the person who will let xyz corporation dig and use explosives under your property or the person who believes women should make their own choice AND who believes your property and water shouldn't be up for grabs to frackers." (This is where sexism actually works in our favor, believe it or not. And I have yet to talk to anyone who likes fracking or wants fracking in their state...which is Missouri.)
2. Alt-Fuel. EVERYONE wants an alternative to fossil fuel. They may not believe in global climate change and they may not give a crap about clean anything. They do, however, believe in innovation and self-sufficiency and hate paying at the pump. What pisses off many of the wingnuts (I've spoken with) who want an alternative to fossil fuel is that we are being left behind...MERIKA is supposed to be exceptional. "Will you vote for the guy who wants to forbid you from buying a Tesla in your state and who wants you to pay extra fees to the utility company for having FREAKIN SOLAR PANELS ON YOUR HOUSE or will you vote for the person who believes in marriage equality AND wants electric cars in every home?" or "If you could have almost-free energy OR a national ban against homosexual marriage which would you choose?"
Seriously. Yes, let's lower ourselves...it's a twofer. Let's not be prideful.
A possible third point of agreement (not as tested as much as above):
3. Net neutrality. Many people do not know what this term means. When I have explained it there has been no one who disagreed. Most just didn't know. "Will you vote for the person who wants to give Comcast the power over what internet content you can read and at what speeds you can read it OR will you vote for the person who wants the internet to remain free of all corporate influence?"
Imagine an ad for a candidate that used all three of these points. They would win. Mention nothing else but these three points and we'd have our majorities back in both houses.
If you don't believe me...start a conversation about these three issues with someone in your world that's a conservative. If different than above, please leave a detailed comment. I'm not talking media articles...I'm talking REAL LIFE people that we all talk to who are not into things like diversity, marriage equality, minimum wage, or women's healthcare choices. We all live in bubbles...some are just bigger than others. I truly want to know what's going on in everyone else's bubble.
P.Ss There is nothing over the extended thingamajig.
