North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory announced to a Gathering of CEO's in a Raleigh Country Club, Thursday Oct 30th, that he is considering expansion of Medicaid into North Carolina. If allowed, Medicaid expansion would open access to 500,000 of North Carolina's poorer citizens. 40,000 of those citizens would be American Veterans. This move could also help others enjoy lower premiums through Medicaid expansion subsidies on the plans they have.
On another note,in a 180 degree about face in his stance of rejecting Medicaid expansion, Thom Tillis (R) candidate for U.S. Senate, said last week that lawmakers and McCrory should consider Medicaid expansion next year.
It Remains to be seen whether this is just hollow political posturing for the sake of getting votes for the Nov 4th midterm elections or a flag for real change in the Admin.
I say that because McCrory signed into law early last year Republican-backed legislation banning the state from expanding Medicaid without General Assembly approval.
State Senate leader Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, has not changed his position opposing Medicaid expansion.
It also could be a indicator that the republicans are in serious risk of loosing the election as above average early voting turnout and mail in ballots returns seem to be pointing to.
For the moment I would call it hopeful for North Carolinas uninsured citizens.
