One of the main reasons that I come to DKos day after day is to have my world expanded.
Through this site, I have been privileged to learn firsthand about struggles that are not my own. And because I have been afforded the opportunity to learn, I have come to care. And through caring, what once wasn't my own, now is.
One of the fights that has spoken to me the most is that of First Americans and the quest to regain dignity that was stolen through murder, humiliation and subjugation. From reading diaries on this subject, I have clicked through and liked Facebook pages and the reward has been exposure to young people who want to take their own back. A generation of today that feels pride in being a First American and is willing to fight for a restoration of dignity. And I, a middle-aged white woman, revel in their determination.
I think of diaries by Navajo about an awakening in South Dakota. An awakening based on the premise that all belong and that all voices should be heard. I reflect on how many Kossacks gave towards engaging those who have long been silenced. And I feel pride.
Nothing worthwhile in life is easy. Fights to correct wrongs can take generations. The only must-have ingredient is people dedicated to fighting - no matter how hopeless things look. No matter what disappointment comes on any given day.
I don't know a Native American phrase to describe the video below. But I do know the battle cry of the struggle for recognition and dignity in South Africa: Amandla. Power.
If these kids can stand up day after day to fight for change, then so can the rest of us.
Nothing worthwhile is easy.
