A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

And by that I mean, are you left-handed?
In my practice I almost always ask new folks if they are right or left-handed. I do so because it is a factor usually if they come in to be treated for musculoskeletal problems. Obviously that would be true for arm and shoulder issues, but it's also true for low back problems as well. Whatever "handedness" you are means that side of your low back with be stronger too. If you're right-handed, your right low back will have thicker and stronger muscles which means your left side will have to compensate for that when you do physical things.
I have an old friend who taught anatomy and physiology in college his whole adult life. He's retired now. Originally he was going to go to medical school but decided he didn't really want to do that, so he ended up being the head of the Science Department at a college. Being a curious man, he did his own statistical information gathering over all those years. At the beginning of each class he asked his students if any were left-handed, then he'd keep track of test scores. Over the decades he discovered that left-handed people scored on average 5% better on exams than their right handed classmates.
Of course that doesn't prove that left-handed people are 5% smarter in learning anatomy and physiology than right-handed people. Since there are far fewer left handed folks it likely meant the much larger pool of right-handed folks dumbed down the average test score of that group. It was interesting nonetheless.
About 10% of the population is left handed. 1% are ambidextrous. 89% are right-handed. Statistically left-handed people die more frequently from accidents most likely due to the fact the world is made for right-handed people. Anyone who went to elementary school when I did remember teachers often tried to force left-handed people to become right-handed. It didn't work and eventually they had left-handed scissors for those kids.
There are all sorts of stats about left-handed people including that they make, on average, 10% less than right-handed people. There is no significant difference in IQ between right-handed and left-handed people. Left-handed people have a higher tendency to have dyslexia, schizophrenia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. People that are both-handed have an even higher percentage of being ADHD than left-handed people. Left-handed people die younger on average than right-handed people too.
Clearly these statistics simply show that with a far smaller sample the percentages of anything showing up will increase compared to a much, much larger sample. The larger the sample, the less percentage chance there is of any anomaly showing up. My friend who kept his own stats of anatomy and physiology test scores didn't believe left-handed people were smarter than others for the same reason that, with only 10% of the population being left-handed, obviously the average age of death would be younger for them as well.
But left-handed people are better at divergent thinking than right-handed people which means being able to take what they already know and then developing new concepts. I've always said there is a difference at being "smart" vs. "intelligent." It's my own definition but here it is: Being smart means being able to take what you've learned and playing around with that. Being intelligent means being able to take what you know and then go beyond that into new thinking. Perhaps left-handed people living in a right-handed world need to be able to develop better divergent thinking. That sure makes sense to me.
There are tons of smart people in the world. There are fewer intelligent ones. Steve Jobs had something to say about this. I'll put it in a block quotes below. This came from an article about the new Apple watch being a pain in the ass for left-handed folks and from another article questioning Steve Jobs.

Q: What do people do for fun out here? I’ve noticed that an awful lot of those who work for you either play music or are extremely interested in it.
Oh yes. And most of them are also left-handed, whatever that means. Almost all of the really great technical people in computers that I’ve known are left-handed. Isn’t that odd?
Q: Are you left-handed?
I’m ambidextrous.
Are you a lefty? Know any? Any thought about it?

by John Crapper ♥ for Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks
Four days after the mid-term elections Seattle & Puget Sound Kossacks had lunch with Representative Joe Fitzgibbon, WA 34th, Chair of the Environment Committee and serving on the Finance, Transportation and Local Government Committees.
Special thanks goes to bleeding blue for making this all possible!
Invited attendees: Marcee Stone-Vegich - Chair of the 34th LD & Ted Barker Vice Chair, Robin Everett - Washington State's Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign Coordinator and Mary Manous with Weldon DeBusk both on the development team creating the Cascadia Climate Action Calendar which compiles monthly the events and actions of all major environmental groups in the Puget Sound Area.
My take-away as leader of Seattle & Puget Sound Kossacks from this meeting. Political reality can't be changed. We must deal with it as best we can. We must also support those fighting for climate sanity as best we can. But when it comes to climate change we cannot afford to wait on politics to be "right" to get something done. We can't afford to just chip away at the edges. We need to pursue the most effective path possible to make climate sanity a reality. Under current circumstances politics may not be that path in the next two years in Washington State.
Instead it will be the Climate Action Hub. And in my neck of the woods it will be promoting the Cascadia Climate Calendar and urging people to get involved.

by cooper888 ♥ for Sacramento Kossacks
We heard from navajo and Meteor Blades about the initiative by Daily Kos to have active Kossack groups in each of the state capitals. DK is looking for engaged Kossack's ready to roll up their sleeves and participate in many different types of activism/advocacy. For example, delivering petitions to the state capitol, participating in various protests, marches, rally's at the capitol, etc. As Meteor Blades pointed out this won't happen over night and is a long term strategy but I think if we all take the lead in our respective states we can make this dream happen sooner than DK leadership expects.
L-R: Front row: Sychotic1, tgypsy, tb92, trevizolga, Mrs. side pocket. Second row: Arundsdel (sp?), Laurel in CA, Kestrel, Meteor Blades.
