A message to ALL quitters (and would-be quitters): You don't have to avoid GUS if you have a failed quit. We won't give you a bad time or nag you. We consider the failed quits as "practice" for the real quit.
I've been in a bit of a fog this week, both literally and in the figurative sense.
The actual fog is something most coastal dwellers get to experience with some regularity. Here in Maine, we issue boating advisories and write scary stories about it, while in the Bay Area, their fog---his name is Karl---is a celebrity of sorts (how very California!) with his own social media presence. It gets foggy away from the coasts, too, in some places so regularly that they named a mountain range and their national park after it.
I don't mind foggy weather. I guess I grew up with it and have always lived in places (Maine, Boston, even London) where Fog Happens. It's sort of like walking through clouds, which is cool and kind of makes up for the havoc it wreaks on your hairstyle. In Ireland, they call that misty fog "soft" weather; I always liked that description.
The other fog---the mental kind---is something I've been struggling with this week. It's a combination of being sick (and taking cold medicine that makes my brain a little fuzzy), not being able to sleep quite enough to shake it, and having to multitask at work (okay, okay...and possibly that second happy hour martini last night). It feels like I'm swimming through Jell-o; slow on the uptake, not quite myself.
But you know, it's okay. Sometimes we're sharp and sometimes, well, we bumble around in a bit of a daze, trying to figure out what we're supposed to do next (or remember what we forgot to do). We all have off days (or weeks, or more) where things don't quite gel, where answers and solutions aren't clear, when the autopilot kind of fails us a bit. It's hard to muster up the motivation to do much when you're in this mode, and it's especially hard to figure out how to even begin to tackle something major, like behavioral change.
This state of affairs rarely lingers for too long, though. Eventually, the fog clears and we regroup and go about our business none the worse for wear. The sun comes out, we can see our next steps more clearly, and those mental gears sputter back to life.
Me? I'm still bumbling around a bit today, but I think I see a break in the clouds ahead. How's it going for you? Is everything clear as day, or are you a Friend of Karl this week?

Have you had some experience with the effects of smoking, and want to write a GUS diary or host an open thread? Please sign up in the Butt Can (Tip Jar), and name the day and time that works for you. The weekly GUS Diary Schedule is below, with regular hosts in bold. There's an open slot just calling your name!
Fri AM: Vacationland (subbing for flumptytail)
Fri PM: Open
Sat AM: Open
Sat PM: Open
Sun AM: gchaucer2
Sun PM: Open
Mon AM: aoeu
Mon PM: Open
Tue AM: gchaucer2
Tue PM: Open
Wed AM: Homers24
Wed PM: Vacationland
Thu AM: anodnhajo
Thu PM: Open
If you can spare a few hours, please consider hosting GUS. It doesn't have to be a permanent slot; it can be a one-time deal or just an open thread! We have had a lot of holes in the schedule lately and could really use your help. Not sure where to start? Just ask for help in the Butt Can (Tip Jar). Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story or provide an open thread and host for a few hours, that's cool too. You do not need to be perfect, you do not need to become a regular, and you would make some quitters very happy.
