Next Monday, in Wichita we will be having a Connect! Unite! Act! meetup, focused on the Sedgewick County Community.
Held at College Hill United Methodist Church (2930 E 1st St) from 5:30PM-7:30PM, this will be one of our first post election C!U!A! meetings (following one in Manhattan). This is a Pot Luck format dinner, and food, drinks etc. will be provided for those who wish to spend time with us.
This meeting will be focused on ISSUES. The meeting will not be focused around campaigning, candidates, etc. (as we are in a non-profit religious meeting hall) but is really focused around our community.
I've been asked to setup a meeting to talk specifically about Social Justice and Minority Outreach - and how we get more people to participate in the process.
With the 2014 elections over, the question remains: what happens next? Kansas, like many states, didn't experience a Republican Wave, instead, we experienced large scale lack of turnout by many - people simply checked out of the process and stayed home.
We want to talk about that - how do we expand our democracy to address the issues of more members of our community? What issues in our society will likely impact us over the next 2 and 4 years?
With so many not voting this year, it is important to remember their silence on issues doesn't mean they consent to the loss of resources, opportunities, and a chance to make it in a state they live in.
What role do we, as citizens have in addressing these issues? And how do we make sure that these issues are addressed in a way that clearly defines what side of the issues we are on?
We'll discuss a lot of this on Monday night, as well as the normally lively question & answer and back and forth open discussion we have at every meeting!
