We have a student announcement team. They did NOT get prior approval. When the announcements came on at the end of 1st period, they announced they would not be reciting the Pledge of Allegiance today, but instead asked all students to observe a moment of silence in honor of all the victims of police brutality. At the end of that moment of silence, they provided information on a memorial march in the nearby city of Baltimore later today.
The principal came on later, announced it had not been approved, and then the Pledge was offered.
I have shortened the tests I am giving today to give students a chance to talk about it and to explain the process. I have government classes today, Gifte4d & Talented and Advanced Placement. While we are not currently studying the legal process it is certainly a relevant use of class time and a real teachable moment.
