GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. If you are quitting or even just thinking of quitting, please join us! We kindly ask that politics be left outside. You can also click the GUS tag to view all diary posts, or access the GUS Library (the archived version for now). Want to make sure you never miss us? Follow (♥) the GUS tag to keep GUS in your Stream and easily find the link to the latest one. It's just that easy!
A message to ALL quitters (and would-be quitters): You don't have to avoid GUS if you have a failed quit. We won't give you a bad time or nag you. We consider the failed quits as "practice" for the real quit.
I'm sick of having wet feet.
Not only that, but I'm sick of having wet hands, and wet shins, and getting splashed by passing cars and trucks every time I set foot outside my house or workplace.
I'm sick of having to remember to wear a hat, or juggling an umbrella while I wrangle the dog or whatever else I'm carrying. I've already spent three hours this year shoveling heavy wet slush out of my driveway and off of my front and back steps and deck; light fluffy snow is a breeze by comparison.
I'm tired of constantly having to towel off my poor dog, who---if his miserable expression is anything to go by---thinks he's being punished every time I drag him outside to walk to work, or walk at lunch (the reason for which is entirely his bathroom and recreational needs, by the way) or to take that final, cold backyard potty break at night.
It's basically been raining here forever. Okay, not forever forever, but it sure feels that way on day two or three (or more) of a big storm system. I can suck it up and deal when it's a bit warmer, but this is Winter rain---shading into snow or sleet, mixing with or turning into ice, or piling up in great big slushy puddles, just waiting for that next sub-freezing night to solidify into a slip-and-fall hazard.
So, not my favorite.
I know I shouldn't complain...I mean, I grew up in Maine, so it's not as though I didn't anticipate this kind of weather this time of year (and forget what you know about the Pacific Northwest---we get more rain here than Portland, Oregon or Seattle, for reals--almost 50" a year of the wet stuff, not counting snowy mix). I know huge areas of the country are struggling with historic drought, and could really use this kind of precipitation, so I thought twice about bitching and moaning over my soggy circumstances.
But, y'know, this is GUS, so I'm going to go ahead and do the bitch and moan thing, if that's okay with you.
Now, it could be worse. WAY worse. Once the days of smoking indoors are no longer an option, it's one long battle with the elements for a lot of smokers. As more and more residences and workplaces go smoke-free, the die-hards are forced to brave the worst that Mother Nature has to offer.
Anyone who has stood in a doorway, soaked to the skin or miserably crouching under an umbrella (a real one, or the soggy makeshift newspaper variety), desperately fumbling to light a cigarette in a downpour knows what I'm talking about. Even worse is trying to keep the damned thing lit---I used to use the venerable, military-style cupped-hand technique, helped by fingers slowly freezing into a claw shape as the minutes tick by---so that you can smoke enough of it to stave off the fidgets for another little while and go back inside to dry off.
And even worse than THAT is the knowledge that you will voluntarily do the same thing again and again and again and again and again, as many times as it takes. Because addiction doesn't really care if you're getting all soggy, or that you're miserable and uncomfortable, or that you've got water pouring down the inside the collar of your jacket or wicking its way up your socks.
It's only interested in that next smoke.
I have to say, eliminating this particular routine from cold, raw, rainy days was pretty sweet, and I don't miss it in the slightest. Sure, I might still have to brave the elements a few times a day, but it's not quite the same. These days, I'm doing it for a good reason (commuting, caring for my dog) and not just because I'm stuck on a hamster wheel tending an addiction that made me miserable in lots of ways, not just the soggy-and-cold ones.
If you're ready to hop off the hamster wheel and join everyone else inside where it's warm and dry, this is the place to start!
SHAMELESS BEGGING: Hey! It appears we have some---okay, lots of---holes in our schedule, and since things always get a little bit hectic around the holidays that is likely to continue. If you have some spare time, we would be super grateful if you could host an edition of GUS. No expectations of fancy content or formatting, just tag the diary GUS and the regulars will make sure schedules and lists and other content get carried over to future diaries.
It's nice to have a place for quitters and supporters to check in and hang out, but we're down to a small handful of people keeping it going and could really use an assist! Thank you!

Have you had some experience with the effects of smoking, and want to write a GUS diary or host an open thread? Please sign up in the Butt Can (Tip Jar), and name the day and time that works for you. The weekly GUS Diary Schedule is below, with regular hosts in bold. There's an open slot just calling your name!
Wed PM: Vacationland
Thu AM: anodnhajo
Thu PM: Open
Fri AM: flumptytail
Fri PM: Open
Sat AM: Open
Sat PM: Open
Sun AM: gchaucer2
Sun PM: Open
Mon AM: aoeu
Mon PM: Open
Tue AM: gchaucer2
Tue PM: Open
Wed AM: Homers24 (? Has anyone seen Homers24 lately?)
...and coming soon, the ever-delightful effervescent!
If you can spare a few hours, please consider hosting GUS. It doesn't have to be a permanent slot; it can be a one-time deal or just an open thread! Not sure where to start? Just ask for help in the Butt Can (Tip Jar). Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story or provide an open thread and host for a few hours, that's cool too. You do not need to be perfect, you do not need to become a regular, and you would make some quitters very happy.
