A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

What's the most favorite pet you ever had?
Eric Lewis lost Daisy the Cat yesterday. I didn't get home from my office until about 8PM PST when I read his diary about her. It made me tear up when he said he loved her more than any animal he's known which got me thinking about my pets.
I've had pets since I was a child, of course. My first dog was Dinker. Mom brought him home from the Denver Dumb Friends League. She didn't ask her children if we wanted a pet or let us be part of the decision. I came home from school one day and there he was...all 25 pounds of him.
He had this knack of climbing up and over the fence. No matter how much I built up that fence, he'd figure a way to climb over it and take off. One day he nearly got hit by a car which ran over his tail as he was running. That ripped his tail off his body leaving only a little stump. You think he might have gotten a clue about climbing over the fence. Nope. He still did it.
The next pet we had was a Siamese cat that simply showed up one day and adopted us. That cat had a personality more like a dog than a cat and would follow us kids around as we walked in the fields and on the streets. We named her Temple.
I didn't have any pets after that until I lived in Portland Oregon where I meet a friend named Burt. We first met at the Denny's restaurant we worked at at the junction of Highway 26 and Highway 17 (the Sunset Highway and the Tigard Highway). One day on an impulse Burt got a puppy that was half coyote. He had a coyote's body and was smart as a whip. Burt simply decided to move away one day and asked if I'd take him. I said sure. His name was Zephyr. Later I left Portland and moved back to Denver for less than a year before I moved to Santa Cruz taking Zephyr with me naturally. One night Zephyr got out of my back yard and never came back. I know he met a bad end.
I didn't have another pet until I met smileycreek. She had a very old Siamese cat named Kira. Smileycreek told me I was the only one Kira took a liking to her whole life. Kira and I were in each other's lives for two years before she passed away.
After that we got Kyle the dog. He was super sweet and smart as a tack. We got him from the animal shelter in Chico. Actually Kyle was the one that picked smileycreek who went to the shelter a few times where they let you take dogs out to the yard in the back to see how they act around you and other dogs.
Kyle just plopped himself down in smileycreek's lap. He was too big and too hairy, but he won her over. Kyle was a border collie and would take himself on walks in the lands around where we live. One day he showed smileycreek the places he went including all the deer trails he knew about. She just let Kyle lead her. He passed away when he was about 15 years old.
Now we have Ziggy and Sancho, two rat terriers, and Cameron an Australian Shepherd. Aussies are supposed to be smart. Cameron is dumb as a post but super sweet. We also have a Bengal cat named Jordie Girl. I love all our critters but I've gotten super attached to Sancho. He's my favorite. Don't let Ziggy and Cameron know that. Jordie Girl won't care.

by John Crapper ♥ for Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks
Four days after the mid-term elections Seattle & Puget Sound Kossacks had lunch with Representative Joe Fitzgibbon, WA 34th, Chair of the Environment Committee and serving on the Finance, Transportation and Local Government Committees.
Special thanks goes to bleeding blue for making this all possible!
Invited attendees: Marcee Stone-Vegich - Chair of the 34th LD & Ted Barker Vice Chair, Robin Everett - Washington State's Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign Coordinator and Mary Manous with Weldon DeBusk both on the development team creating the Cascadia Climate Action Calendar which compiles monthly the events and actions of all major environmental groups in the Puget Sound Area.
My take-away as leader of Seattle & Puget Sound Kossacks from this meeting. Political reality can't be changed. We must deal with it as best we can. We must also support those fighting for climate sanity as best we can. But when it comes to climate change we cannot afford to wait on politics to be "right" to get something done. We can't afford to just chip away at the edges. We need to pursue the most effective path possible to make climate sanity a reality. Under current circumstances politics may not be that path in the next two years in Washington State.
Instead it will be the Climate Action Hub. And in my neck of the woods it will be promoting the Cascadia Climate Calendar and urging people to get involved.

by cooper888 ♥ for Sacramento Kossacks
We heard from navajo and Meteor Blades about the initiative by Daily Kos to have active Kossack groups in each of the state capitals. DK is looking for engaged Kossack's ready to roll up their sleeves and participate in many different types of activism/advocacy. For example, delivering petitions to the state capitol, participating in various protests, marches, rally's at the capitol, etc. As Meteor Blades pointed out this won't happen over night and is a long term strategy but I think if we all take the lead in our respective states we can make this dream happen sooner than DK leadership expects.
L-R: Front row: Sychotic1, tgypsy, tb92, trevizolga, Mrs. side pocket. Second row: Arundsdel (sp?), Laurel in CA, Kestrel, Meteor Blades.
