One of the looming Obamacare horror stories, critics maintained, was that it would bring an end to employers providing health insurance. While some companies, notably Walmart, took advantage of the new law to dump their employee's benefits, a new
survey [pdf] from the Urban Institute finds that the rate of employer-based insurance hasn't fallen at all.
They have, in fact, remained constant: around 82 percent, 86 percent, and 71 percent, respectively, for all workers and around 63 percent, 71 percent, and 45 percent, respectively, for low-income workers. To date, the ACA has had no effect on employer coverage. Economic incentives for workers to obtain coverage from employers remain strong.
So much for that rap. It holds true for large and small companies. The fact remains that providing benefits remains a way for companies to be able to attract and keep employees. Because employers pay for health insurance with pre-tax dollars, it's a good financial deal for them.
