Once more it's Friday! The weekend ahead of us, for some it means work, for some it means time off. This particular weekend Bit and I are seeing better as we got our glasses on Wednesday. One of the few benefits of Rick Scott's privatizing medicaid in this state is that most medicaid plans now cover vision for adults. I found out that I have some UV damage to my corneas, and MUST have UV protective sunglasses to go over my glasses or risk having cataracts in 5 years or so. Medicaid doesn't pay for them, so we're looking.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group gives Kossacks a safe place to check in, a daily diary where we can let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, earthquakes, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It also allows us to find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, earthquakes etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a Kosmail and ask to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
We do have a diary schedule. But, when you are ready to write that diary, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMOM a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FloridaSNMOM is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.

Eye glasses have a long history, they were invented by an unknown person in Italy during the mid to late 1200's. Mostly worn by monks and scholars of the time, they were held by hand in front of the eyes or balanced on the nose while one read.
With the development of the printing press in 1452 and the greater preponderance of books, reading glasses became more popular and less expensive.
In the 1700's eyeglasses were made by hand, but they began to have temple pieces that rested over the ear, and Ben Franklin invented bifocals.
In the 1800's using glasses was considered a detriment, it meant you were old or unwell, and so people who needed them used them as little as humanly possible. Because of this the Lorgnette was developed. Essentially, glasses on a stick.
By the 1900's glasses were seen as necessary and stylish and the prejudice against glasses went away as new styles were introduced. Pince-nez were developed in France in the 1850's gained popularity, especially when Teddy Roosevelt began using them.
In the 1930's sunglasses became popular, because they were used by WWII Pilots out of necessity and they began to catch on in Hollywood. Hollywood and popular culture continued to influence both eye glass and sun glass designs through the rest of the century. Plastics allowed for lighter and greater styles in the 1940's and in the 70's Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis popularized oversized lenses.
In the 80's plastic lenses became available making glasses both lighter and reducing risk of shattered lenses.
Every year new styles are produced, new lens coatings and options are created, and better visual acuity is offered. As people use computers and read smaller phone screens, new glasses are prescribed.
