If it’s melted, it’s ruined. We’re not scientists, but we figure that ice caps, like ice cream, are best kept frozen.
Statement from Ben & Jerry's. We need more businesses like this.
Today, our economies are overly dependent on products and manufacturing processes that create large amounts of greenhouse gases. Much of the global economy relies heavily on fossil fuels for transportation and industry, harmful gases for refrigeration, and damaging chemicals associated with agriculture. When we consider the feed crops, waste management, and natural biological processes that livestock require, including dairy cows, farm animals are also significant sources of gases that contribute to climate change.
What’s the solution?
We are already seeing the effects of a warming planet. It is more urgent than ever that we take steps to dramatically reduce global greenhouse gas emissions – and to do it in a way that equitably shares the burdens and risks of climate change among the nations of the world. Ultimately, we have to break the link between economic growth and development from natural resource extraction and depletion.
There is no quick fix to solve climate change, but we know what we need to do. We must:
*Divest from fossil fuels
*Increase renewable energy sources
*Put a price on carbon pollution
*Work with developing countries to invest in renewable energy
Ben & Jerry's speaks very well for themselves, especially calling themselves out for emissions from dairy cows. Individuals as well as businesses need to be on board for climate solutions. Click on the B&J statement link above for ideas to help you get involved with climate action.
