The new bill authored by Chris Smith and passed by the House on Thursday, has drawn a line in the sand. These anti-abortion Republicans are determined to force their morality on all the women of this country. If they can't ban abortion altogether, they are going to tax it, thus making it unavailable for women who can not afford to pay for it on their own.
Jennifer Bendery of the Huffington Post reported:
The bill would do a number of things -- including block federal funds for abortion for women who are in the military, who live in Washington, D.C., and who are poor -- but one aspect of the legislation that hasn't received much attention is the fact that it would raise taxes on the vast majority of small businesses.
The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act would deny small businesses a tax credit they currently receive through what's known as the SHOP exchange, a part of the Affordable Care Act, if they include abortion care in their health plans. Roughly 87 percent of private plans include abortion services as part of comprehensive coverage, meaning the bulk of small businesses would be hit with a tax hike if the bill were to become law.
I'm not going to argue the right versus wrong argument that we, as a country, have hashed out before. Roe vs. Wade decided, many years ago, that women have the right to decide issues about their own body. To tell the truth, I don't know what is right. I do know that it was a choice I had to face once. The choice I made, after much soul searching, broke my heart. I have never forgotten, and I have never gotten over the tragic circumstances that made it necessary.
This decision must be left to a woman and her doctor. A poor woman must have the same right and access as a rich woman. Anything less is unacceptable.
Trust the Republican Party to find a way to make money from something they think is immoral. I find that absolutly hilarious. I think it demonstrates the rot at the core of their party.
