Over the next month or so, I'm aiming to build a portfolio of ad ideas and post them here for discussion and review. Because Daily Kos is the birthplace and home base of the People Power Project, its developing ideas, plans and activities should be accessible to everyone. Therefore I invite the members of the People Power Project groups, and all interested Kossacks, to critique these ads in the comments and to contribute your own ideas in whatever form feels right for you, be it kosmail, comment or diary.
Many people think that ads must be loud and aggressive to get people's attention. Personally, that approach really turns me off! I think most people are non-confrontational so, like me, they react negatively to confrontational advertising. Besides, different is more eye-catching than more of the same.
Really effective ads are those which the audience can relate to personally, either because the ad reflects how they see themselves or it projects an image of what they want to be, want to have or want to believe. Characterizations they feel comfortable with are also important and ads with an infusion of humor can lift them from mundane to memorable.
My personal aim in these ads is two-fold: to further progressive values and policies while pushing back against Republican inculcation. In the third of my ad proposals (you'll find the other two in the diary links at the end), the objective is to provide a counter argument to the meme of “small” government which the GOP has been driving for far too long without push-back.
Specific vehicles are mentioned in the ad for two reasons. Firstly, I don't want to put any brand off-side so it will be imperative that the two vehicles featured are by the same car maker. Secondly, I favor Volkswagen because, after all the trouble they had with Senator Corker interfering in their Tennessee plant, they might be amenable to sponsoring the ad, especially as it would advance-promote the CrossBlue which is due for release in 2016.
People Power Presents:
It isn't Size that Matters
.
☆☆☆
Fade in: Head and shoulders of couple, blurred background
Dad: We need to go small, keep spending to a minimum.
Mom: Let's see how well that works for us. Okay kids, pile in!
Camera pulls out to reveal car yard. Four kids are sardined into the back seat of a VW Beetle while Mom, Dad and dog look in from outside...
Kid 1 (tall teenager with head against the ceiling): If we hit a bump, I’ll get concussion!
Kid 2 (smallest child also with head against the ceiling because he’s sitting on the lap of Kid 3): Me too – and I don't have a safety belt!
Kid 3 (to Kid 2): Owww! Stop wriggling! You're hurting my legs!
Kid 4: Where's Sammy going to go? (Dog looks dejectedly at the overcrowded back seat) And you’re not strapping him to the roof – that’s cruel!
Dad (horrified): I'd never dream of strapping Sammy to the roof!
Mom (to Dad): Still think size is more important than purpose?

Fade in: Family and dog all comfortably seated in a Volkswagen CrossBlue...
Mom: It's big enough to tow a caravan so we will be saving money – no more hotel rooms.
Kid 1: It will tow a boat too, Dad - we can go fishing!
Kid 2: YAY!
Kid 3: It can go off-road.
Kid 4: We can see wilderness up close.
Mom looks at Dad
Dad: I know. It sounds good but in reality small is just not a workable option for us.
Mom: I knew you'd get it... eventually.

Government's role is to serve the needs of the people.
It's purpose that matters, not size.
