The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCSE), formerly Morality in Media, and LifePetitions, a project of the anti-abortion LifeSiteNews.com, is calling for a boycott of Fifty Shades of Grey, which will be released on Valentine’s Day weekend. Could the producers ask for any better pre-release publicity for the controversial film that the MPAA, (Motion Picture Association of America), has given an “R” rating because, as they put it, it contains “strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity, and [salty] language?”

On January 28, the Christian evangelical online news service, Charisma News, posted a story titled “The Ugly Truth About Fifty Shades of Grey Movie.” According to Charisma News’ Amanda Smith, the NCSE has come up with a series of alternative actions for people opposed to the film. As of January 31, the Charisma News story has generated a boatload of readers, garnering 25.7k “shares” and 2.8k Facebook “likes.”
For potential boycotters, the NCSE has set up a new webpage called fiftyshadesisabuse.com (http://endsexualexploitation.org/...), which “highlights 50-plus ways that Fifty Shades harms, and provides various actions that the public can take, including signing a boycott petition and joining the #50DollarsNot50Shades campaign, which calls on patrons to forgo the film and donate to women's shelters instead.”
According to endsexualexpoloitation.org, the Problem is: “The Fifty Shades of Grey book series and franchise promote torture as sexually gratifying and normalize domestic violence, particularly violence against women. This type of material cultivates a rape and sexual violence culture and is now permeating our society.”
In another well-received Charisma News piece, posted January 29, and titled, “Let’s Call Fifty Shades of Grey What It Is: Perverted,” J. Lee Grady writes:
“We Americans get really angry when oil companies spill toxic fuel in our oceans; yet we applaud when Hollywood dumps a tanker of poisonous garbage like Fifty Shades of Grey on our country—with no offer to clean up the damage. We should be outraged. I'm not going to picket my local theater when this movie debuts, but I'm urging people to think before they spend $10.50 to flush what's left of American decency down the toilet.”
Grady’s piece has garnered 5591 “Shares” and 5.4k Facebook “likes.”
Grady, a former editor of Charisma, author of 10 Lies the Church Tells Women and other books, and who runs a ministry called The Mordecai Project, lays out “three of the biggest reasons why we should urge everyone to cover their eyes and run from Fifty Shades of Grey: “1. It encourages sexual deviance; 2. It glorifies violence against women; 3. It totally perverts the meaning of love.”
Grady concluded by asking Charisma readers, who appear to have a genuine interest in these matters, not to support the movie.
Patrick Trueman and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation
The CEO and President of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation is Patrick A, Trueman, who, according to his bio on the organization’s website, is the former Chief of the Child Exploitation Section in the U.S. Department of Justice during the George H.W. Bush administration. Founded in 1962 as Morality in Media, the organization changed its name to the National Center on Sexual Exploitation in early 2015 “to better describe the scope and mission to expose the seamless connection between all forms of sexual exploitation.”
NCSE recently announced its 2015 Dirty Dozen List, which includes Fifty Shades of Grey, Facebook. YouTube, Cosmopolitan Magazine, “Backpage.com, which garners 80 percent of all prostitution advertising dollars, CKE Restaurants for its sexualized hamburger commercials and print ads for its Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s chains, … American Apparel … because of their ads depicting young women engaged in sexual acts,” [and] the American Library Association, for “encourage[ing] public libraries to keep all computers unfiltered and to allow patrons, including children, access to pornography.”
For at least the second year in a row, the Department of Justice, “which continues to disregard federal laws prohibiting distribution of hardcore pornography,” tops the Dirty Dozen list.

LifeSiteNews.com weighs in
LifeSiteNews.com, which calls itself "The largest international pro-life and pro-family news agency in the world," has had a Fifty Shades of Grey problem since the books were first published. On its website, Lifepetitions.com maintains that it is "a community of grassroots activists who are harnessing the power of social media to create real change to help build a true 'Culture of Life."
In her reporting of this story, Design&Trend’s Katia Kleyman pointed out that LifeSiteNews’ advocacy also calls for the defunding of Planned Parenthood.
Kleyman: “So what is their problem with 50 Shades of Grey? Apparently they think it's porn. ‘Say no to porn. Boycott 50 Shades of Grey, the movie,’ is the petition's title.” According to Kleyman, “The light BDSM elements of the movie clearly don't sit well with them. They say that the film promotes misogyny, abuse, and sadomasochism. This is something that has been expressed in liberal and conservative circles alike.
“They are also outraged that the film is being released on Valentine's Day. If you choose to sign the petition, which is being sent to the executive at Universal Pictures and Focus Features, you will be making a promise. The promise is that ‘this Valentine's Day I will instead be taking a stand for true romance, and will be boycotting the 50 Shades of Grey movie, and encouraging others to do the same."
Kleyman noted that LifeSiteNews.com, which has “had its problems with 50 Shades of Grey since the book was released. Just look at the title of this article from their website, ‘If You Find This Filthy Book in Your Home, Burn it!’"
Interestingly enough, on Sunday, February 1, the San Francisco Chronicle ran an Associated Press story headlined, “Islamic State group ransack libraries.” The story details a raid on the Central Library of Mosul, during which militants carted away as many as 2,000 books –“including children’s stories, poetry, philosophy and tomes on sports, culture and science” -- with the intention of burning them.
