Saman Naseem, a juvenile “offender” is currently awaiting his execution. If the Islamic Regime’s judicial system sticks to tradition, it will likely be a public hanging—to send a chilling, sobering message home to all Kurds in Iran, “Keep quiet, you aren't equal.”
Around the world, Kurd’s are getting praise for their bravery and resolve in fighting off ISIS. In the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kurd’s are yet another persecuted minority. Their ethnic identity is a bull-eye on the back.
Naseem’s “crime” was committed when he was 17 years of age. Under a variety of International Laws and charters, treaties that Iran is party to, and good-governance norms, he was a minor—and should responsibly be protected under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Islamic Regime should uphold this law—not disgrace and violate it. But when it comes to the radically Shia Islamic Regime, honoring International Law and modern conventions are of no interest.
The Regime’s penchant for violating International Law and moral code aside, the crime itself is outdated, irrelevant and unfounded. Naseem is charged with “enmity to god” and “corruption on Earth.” Vague, regressive and obviously doused in political motive against his Kurdish community to counter any political or societal frustrations they may have voiced.
Since the Islamic Regime was established in Iran just over 30 years ago, Iran’s ethnic and religious minorities have faced unimaginable oppression and counter-productive persecution—all in the name the Ayatollah Khomeini, the first Supreme Leader’s fanatical religious beliefs. Today, enmity towards the “other,” racial/religious (Persian-Shia) superiority, and fear-mongering are pillars on which the Islamic Regime thrives. Break one, and the Regime comes crashing down. Well aware, the Regime continues to perpetuate these—all a key strategy in its survival toolbox. And it seems to be working, as the Regime has effectively been able to manipulate its way out of sanctions, while continuing to build nuclear military capability as the world watches along.
Naseem, an innocent Kurdish teenager is yet another pawn the Islamic Regime is using to strengthen these mentioned pillars. A hostage on death-row, in his own land.
