Jason Perkey, who has served as executive director in Kansas since 2012, is scheduled to assume duties in South Carolina in April. He would be the second top party leader to prepare for an exit after Joan Wagnon, the state party's chairwoman, indicated she would step down.
Perkey, a Kentucky Native was dealt a pretty difficult hand in Kansas. In 2010, the Kansas Democratic Party took a significant hit in that election which put Republicans back in control of the governor's mansion and broadened Republican majorities.
In the four years since assuming the position in Kansas, state party officials have offered their support for his professional, courteous demeanor as well as his intent to grow the party base and expand the donor pool.
The number of registered Democrats in Kansas has fallen every election cycle since 2010, and Democratic incumbents have lost in each following election, while no new seats have been added.
Kansas was particularly difficult for anyone, and Joan Wagnon, outgoing Kansas Democratic Party Chair, praises Jason for his efforts.

"Jason brought a degree of professionalism and experience to the Kansas Democratic Party that had been sorely needed," Wagnon said. "He worked tirelessly for the party and our Democratic candidates."
She credited Perkey with broadening the state party's infrastructure and fund-raising operation.
With both South Carolina and Kansas struggling to find a solution, some musical chairs seem to be at play in hopes that smart people with who want the best for the party can have success elsewhere.
