Tonight's Top Comments diary is going to be short on words but very long on heart. Samsung recently released a video to promote their new video call center for deaf people titled Hearing Hands. With the help of branding agency Leo Burnett, Samsung Türkiye spent a considerable amount of time prepping for and producing this amazing video. The video has understandingly gone viral with over a million and a half hits in just five days.
As Instanbul resident Muharrem and his sister step out of their house, Muharrem begins encountering the people who went to such elaborate lengths to gift him "a day without barriers." A cheery fellow signs good morning to Muharrem and continues on his way as a puzzled Muharrem does an adorable double take. He is offered warm bagels by a signing baker and then assists a grateful man whose fruit has gotten away from him. He's offered an apple as a reward, in sign language of course. A woman excuses herself as she bumps into him and his taxi driver signs a warm welcome when the brother and sister get into his cab.
They finally stroll into a public square where Muharrem discovers a signing Samsung representative addressing him from a digital kiosk display, explaining what had taken place. As Muharrem is greeted by the people who had participated in the film, he is overcome by his emotions. And so was I.
If you haven't yet seen it, I most heartily urge you to give it a watch.
Yes, this is advertisement for a huge corporation, but I am touched by the thought put into it. It isn't often that I can look at something like this without a cynical eye, but this was truly moving. For that, I hope their product is a knocking success. It made me more deeply understand how deaf people experience our world. It prompted me to spend several hours learning how I might better incorporate dos and dont's in my interactions with them. So, thank you Samsung for giving me more insight into my fellow man. And damn you for making this old curmudgeon cry.
