It always makes me uncomfortable to see the worshipfulness that Apple inspires. At least with the Beatles, those teens were going gaga over people. Apple is a corporation and despite what the Supreme Court says, it isn't a person. It's all eerily reminiscent of what Paddy Chayefsky predicted in Network--the complete domination by corporations of American life.
The Apple Watch is a tool for surveillance. Apple admits this: "Our most personal device yet." We're getting closer to you than we ever have before.
Some of this will be good. Doctors can measure patients' heart rates remotely. Physical therapists can determine whether you're getting enough exercise. It will be that much easier for parents to locate and quickly message their children.
And some of it is terrifying. Put a Watch on an employee and your boss can know when you sit down on the job, stand still, or run like crazy because you're behind schedule. By monitoring heart rate, the boss can literally determine how much energy you are putting into your job. Drug companies will be able to get data about our bodies with an amazing level of precision.
It can easily be bugged by the government. Many people will go to bed with it so companies could pump messages into our ears. It's only a matter of time before this thing has the sensors to detect our emotions.
This is a device to monitor the most intimate aspects of our bodies. Surely, this should dim the excitement a little?
