The outrage has been palpable. The excuses have been lame. The support for the actions of these 47 Senators has been non-existent. Will this culminate in charges being brought against these seditious, treacherous, partisan politicians? If we value our country it should be. This was nothing short than an assault on the Office of the President of United States.
Here is the letter:
What should jump out is, it is a direct attempt to undermine and call into doubt the authority, not of President Obama to make treaties but the Office of the President of the United States itself. These senators are engaging a foreign power, which they have no authority to do, to insert themselves into the negotiation of foreign policy which again, they have no authority to do, to weaken the duly designated office which carries out foreign policy.
The intention is not masked. It is brazenly espoused by the letter's 'mastermind' republican Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, "The end of these negotiations isn't an unintended consequence of congressional action. It is very much an intended consequence. A feature, not a bug, so speak," in January, addressing a conservative conference hosted by the right-wing lobbying group, 'Heritage Action for America'.
As stated by the letter's author, this is nothing short of and effort to subvert the government of the United States of America. There is no 'slippery slope' here. This one has already slid. If this act of open sedition with treasonous implications is allowed to stand it sets a terrible precedent. It opens the door for all institutions, all offices, all laws, all authorities and all regulations of the United States to be openly disobeyed.
If there is no prosecution, that it is more than tacit approval of these 47 senators actions, it is direct approval. The worldwide reputation of the United States has been grievously damaged. The only course that can set this straight is a clear display that this type of action will never be tolerated.
There has always been infighting in our political process and there always will be. That is not the issue. Neither is a senator or anyone else publicly disagreeing with our country's or president's policies. It is the direct and unauthorized engagement of a foreign government to undermine the authority of the United States government that is issue.
This cannot stand. The 47 Senators must be prosecuted for our nation to begin to right this incredibly serious and damaging wrong.
