Monday Morning Sunday School
Today's sermon comes from:
The Maroon Man Church of Latter-Day Sinners
Father Bombast addresses the “War on Marriage”:
“The so-called war on marriage is a subject that concerns us all. Is it real? Is it serious? Absolutely! And it's not a recent phenomenon.
It all started with Moses granting the first divorce, which God rebuked, Malachi 2:16
"For the Lord, the God of Israel, says he hates divorce and cruel men. Therefore, control your passions—let there be no divorcing of your wives."
but Jesus later upheld.
Matthew 5:31
“The law of Moses says, ‘If anyone wants to be rid of his wife, he can divorce her merely by giving her a letter of dismissal.’
But I say that a man who divorces his wife, except for fornication, causes her to commit adultery if she marries again. And he who marries her commits adultery."
After that came the suppression of polygamy. A sad deviation, given renewed consideration by those seeking to suppress monogender marriage; but I get ahead of myself.
It was then the demon Ronald Reagan who introduced no-fault divorce to America. This began the dominoes falling until the last one fell a few years ago.
Now there is a new assault on marriage. In Mobile County, Alabama, they have completely stopped issuing marriage licenses to anyone. An entire county that has abandoned marriage; traditional, monogender, all of it; allegedly in the name of protecting marriage.
Not to be outdone, Oklahoma is flirting with the idea of eliminating marriage licenses altogether. This complication of the law shuffles responsibilities around the bureaucracy and removes gender references, but it also exposes a pre-existing problem with recognition of religious marriage: Only Christian and Jewish religions are recognized. All other religions are (implicitly) excluded, including one of the biggest religions in the world! Oklahoma has decided to choose which religions are recognized as legitimate, and which are not.
There's a war on marriage all right, and it's being waged by the people claiming to defend it."
"We're all born sinners. It's God's Plan, so just go with it."
