Good Morning Kossacks and Welcome to Morning Open Thread (MOT)
We're known as the MOTley Crew and you can find us here every morning at 7:00 am Eastern (and perhaps sometimes earlier!). Feel free to volunteer to take a day - permanently or just once in awhile. With the Auto Publish feature you can set it and forget it. Sometimes the diarist du jour shows up much later: that's the beauty of Open Thread...it carries on without you! Volunteer in the comment threads.

Today, we have the last installment of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short story "Danger!! Being the Log of Capt. John Sirius," which The Evening Star, a daily newspaper in Washington D.C., published in late March 1915. (See previous posts for
Part 1 and
Part 2.)
Written before the war that was underway in Europe at the time the Star published this story, Conan Doyle intended it to illustrate the threat that the new submarine technology posed to England should an enemy obtain such capability. In his story, England and a small, fictional country are at war. Captain Sirius is fighting for the fictional country, and he carries out a plan to use a small fleet of submarines to sink ships bringing critical food supplies.into England.and thereby force England to surrender.
"Danger!!" is almost a "ripped from the headlines" story. Submarine warfare was a new and significant threat during World War I. Indeed, the same edition of The Evening Star that carried the third installment also had a front page report of submarine attacks resulting in great loss of life:
