Hi beer fans! Happy Friday. Come share a cold one with FNBB!
One of the many strategies for marketing beer (or anything else) is to create tie-ins to events, movies, TV shows and celebrities. How often do these work?
I'm not thinking of product placement, although that is part of the same idea. For example when the new Hawaii 5-0 series came on, we noticed the characters drank lots of Kona Brewing beer. But I'm thinking of special beers labeled with a tie-in.
I haven't tried any, but I know there has been Game of Thrones beer for several seasons. I'm willing to bet this has been successful. Game of Thrones is the hottest brand in TV right now and they can probably sell all kinds of shit. I expect it's good beer, made by well-known craft brewer Ommegang.
On the other hand there's the stuff that inspired this diary, which is the stack of Hobbit ale that's been in my local market since the last movie came out months ago. The "Gollum" Imperial Pilsner gets decent reviews but those $10 bombers aren't moving.
What other "gimmick" beers have you seen? I know I've diaried several on FNBB over the years, from athletes and rock musicians, but don't remember seeing them in stores or bars.
I'm about to open an Anchor Steam, and after that I'll go to the homebrew club. I'll check in here later. What are you drinking? Who's brewing?
