Make no mistake, this is not the government Bibi Netanyahu would have wanted. He is much more comfortable with a right of center government where he can put a pretty face on the apartheid/colonial regime in the West Bank and East Jerusalem (aka Judea and Samaria, the biblical name preferred by religious extremists). However, the government he was ultimately left with was an extremist, hard right government.
This is mainly because Israel as a society has shifted rightward over the years, so as the political center of gravity shifted all parties have become more right wing. An astounding 95% of Israeli Jews supported the recent Israeli assault on Gaza that indiscriminately slaughtered hundreds of children, which began when Israel broke the 2012 ceasefire.
The ultimate result is probably the most right wing and bigoted government in Israeli history (which is saying a lot). Even the most moderate party in the coalition - Kulanu - are a group of former Likudniks themselves, albeit a bit more moderate. One could make the argument that this government only has 61 seats in the Knesset (a bare majority). But this in only because former Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman's party (a right wing bigot himself) did not join the coalition because he was not offered the portfolios he asked for.
With that said I thought a run down of some revealing quotes by several of the most notable members of the Bibi's new government is in order...
Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan
Deputy Defense Minister in charge of the IDF's Civil Administration in the West Bank (a.k.a. Israel's apartheid/colonial regime)
“[Palestinians] are beasts, they are not human.”
“A Jew always has a much higher soul than a gentile, even if he is a homosexual.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ayelet Shaked
Justice Minister
A quote from Uri Elitzur she shared on her Facebook page:
"They [Palestinians] are all enemy combatants, and their blood shall be on all their heads. Now this also includes the mothers of the martyrs, who send them to hell with flowers and kisses. They should follow their sons, nothing would be more just. They should go, as should the physical homes in which they raised the snakes. Otherwise, more little snakes will be raised there."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Moshe Ya'alon
Defense Minister
"But I maintain that it [Palestinians] is cancer. My professional diagnosis is that there is a phenomenon here that constitutes an existential threat... There are all kinds of solutions to cancerous manifestations. Some will say it is necessary to amputate organs. But at the moment, I am applying chemotherapy, yes."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Miri Regev
Culture Minister
"the Sudanese were a cancer in our body."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Danny Danon
Science and Technology Minister
"Glenn Beck has proven himself to be a true friend of Israel... It is a real honor to accompany Glenn on his Independence Day visit to the foundation stone of our people."
"President Obama should not interfere with the rights of the Jewish people to live in Jerusalem," said Danon. "This ... is a racist demand, saying that Jews cannot live in Jerusalem, only Arabs."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naftali Bennett
Education Minister
"When you [Palestinians] were still climbing trees, we had a Jewish state here… We were here long before you."
"If you catch terrorists, you have to simply kill them," Bennett allegedly said, according to a report in the Hebrew-language print edition of Yedioth Ahronoth.... Israeli National Security Adviser Ya’akov Amidror allegedly responded by saying that such a practice was illegal. Bennett then reportedly declared, "I’ve killed lots of Arabs in my life – and there’s no problem with that.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Benjamin Netanyahu
Prime Minister
”The right-wing government is in danger. Arab voters are coming out in droves to the polls. Left-wing organizations are bussing them out.”
P.S. there are many more bigoted comments by these people and even more bigots in the new government (e.g. Uri Ariel and Israel Katz) but I frankly don't have the time.
