A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

So this past Saturday morning
I commented about two large earthquakes on the coast of California. I've been subscribed to the
USGS ENS earthquake notifications since the
Loma Prieta 6.9 here in 1989 (63 people were killed) to desensitize myself to earthquake fear. It has helped. We have small earthquakes nearly every day.
But, I was very uneasy reading that notification about a 4.8 at Hearst Castle and 5.5 near Ukiah 352 miles away at 4:33 AM that Saturday morning.
Region: CENTRAL CALIFORNIA
Geographic coordinates: 35.827N, 121.252W
Magnitude: 4.8
Depth: 87 km
Time near the Epicenter: 30 May 2015 04:33:55
Location with respect to nearby cities:
21 km (13 mi) NNW of San Simeon, California
44 km (27 mi) SSW of King City, California
54 km (33 mi) S of Greenfield, California
55 km (34 mi) WNW of Paso Robles, California
306 km (190 mi) S of Sacramento, California
Region: NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
Geographic coordinates: 39.469N, 123.526W
Magnitude: 5.5
Depth: 38 km
Time near the Epicenter: 30 May 2015 04:33:38
Location with respect to nearby cities:
12 km (7 mi) WNW of Brooktrails, California
44 km (27 mi) NW of Ukiah, California
96 km (60 mi) NW of Clearlake, California
110 km (68 mi) NNW of Healdsburg, California
201 km (125 mi) WNW of Sacramento, California
What's next, the San Andreas??? Well, it motivated me to augment my emergency water supply and I should have a delivery today of several 5 gallon bottles of water to store. We're good on canned goods and grains in the freezer, which, btw, I rotate out to food banks before they expire and then replenish my emergency supply on a regular basis. After the 6.9 in '89 I have ready, camping supplies, i.e. tent, sleeping bags, etc. So we're good. And, I know how to shut of the gas main.
BUT, hold the phone! That evening I get more email notifications that the earthquake events were deleted! Wut? This is the first time I've noticed an event deleted. It turns out these large earthquakes were erroneously reported!
"It's bogus," said John Bellini, a USGS geophysicist. "When the waves from these big quakes hit [the Northern Californian sensor] network they think it's a local quake. They have some kind of filtering system, but it's not working properly. There is some problem with that on their end."
Wow. Good to know.
What I suspected was a warning for the Big One is not stressing me now. But, I'm more prepared, so there's that.
So how 'bout that accidental fear-causing misinformation? Well it looks like Hollywood and the San Andreas movie that wants to strike fear into your hearts got a lot wrong.
1. Earthquake faults don't open up into canyons
2. The East Coast cannot feel a California quake
3. The San Andreas cannot produce a big tsunami
4. The Hoover Dam won't explode downstream in an earthquake
5. You can't run during a major earthquake
Once again, thanks movie industry. Heck of a job!
Have you ever been fooled by fear or scaremongering tactics?

Announcing Asheville, North Carolina as the location
for our next Regional Event! 9.26.15
Asheville, N.C. is the destination for September 26, 2015! DKos Asheville, the In-Real-Life group under the leadership of randallt, has been setting the example for other IRL groups across the nation regarding registering people to vote, getting out the vote, having a state open thread and setting up strategy conferences for their region. Because of this impressive leadership we've asked randallt to be the State Leader for all of North Carolina. We've got important work to do on the ground there and randallt has shown he's the person to make that happen.
All states are welcome to attend this event and if you do you can expect to meet Markos Moulitsas in person, as well as some of the Daily Kos staff. More details regarding this regional event will be shared in the future so please stay tuned to Connect! Unite! Act!
For now, SAVE THE DATE and spread the word!
navajo maintains the above event list. Kosmail her if you have any diaries
about your event or if you have changes or additions.
EVERYONE is welcome, tell us what you're working on,
share your show and tell, vent, whatever you want.
This is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.
