Poor Andria and Zoey Green of Overton, TX. Hoping to raise $105 to buy their dad a present for Father's Day, they went all "free market" like their GOP Texas leaders pretend to love by setting up a lemonade stand. Things were going well -- they'd managed to raise about $25 -- until the long arm of Texas law should up. In fact, not just any cop, but none other than the local
Chief of Police AND his Code Enforcement Officer. I suspect that after the difficulty the McKinney, Texas officer had with one cute, 14 year old in a bikini that he'd better bring back up to this volatile situation.
"We had kettle corn and lemonade. The lemonade was for 50 cents and the kettle corn was a dollar, but if you got both it was a dollar.”
They had been open for about an hour and had already made more than $25, when police showed up, initially because they were set up near the curb in a residential street.
“A code enforcement officer and the chief, she called me to the side and said we needed a permit,” Sandi recalls.
The City agreed to waive the $150 fee for a 'Peddler's Permit," but the health department would prove a bigger problem.
Police Chief Clyde Carter explains, “It is a lemonade stand but they also have a permit that they are required to get.”
Ah, free markets unencumbered from onerous regulation! Ah, rewarding hard work and initiative! Ah, blessed entrepreneurial zeal! Ah, family values! Ah, the sweet taste of freedom!!!! Ah, the...what? Huh?
How silly of those girls, they should have known that "freedom's just another word for nutters just like Cruz," at least I think that's how the song goes...
...Oh, almost forgot, since the girls were white and thus not too scary, they were not thrown to the ground and cuffed. No word though on whether or not they were held at gun point while being interrogated.
