Democratic presidential hopeful Jim Webb is still defending the Confederate flag. Webb, 69, a Vietnam veteran, said to Time magazine Wednesday afternoon that Americans should "remember honorable Civil War veterans, including slave owners in the Union Army".
Webb also said, "“The Confederate Battle Flag has wrongly been used for racist and other purposes in recent decades. It should not be used in any way as a political symbol that divides us”.
I disagree with Webb's statement. But I respect his service to the United States of America.
Webb is a moderate Democrat, but has progressive credentials. He can win back Appalachia, which has been trending away from Democrats for years. He can win St. Joseph, Missouri, Niles, Ohio, Moosic, Pa., and other working class areas that have abandoned the Democratic Party. If Webb runs for president, he will face questions on the Confederate flag.
I am not endorsing Webb. I think he can be a formidable candidate. He appeals to veterans. He appeals to the working class. He has national security experience. He is a man's man. He was born fighting.
We'll see how Webb does in Iowa, New Hampshire, etc., if he does decide to run for president in 2016. He has an committee in place already, as he is testing the waters.
