Here's another remnant of Confederate history written onto American government today: military bases named after Confederate generals. That's bases of the military of the United States of America named after generals from an army that fought against the United States. Just so we're clear.
So! Any plans to change that?
"As of now, there's no discussion of adjusting our current naming policies," said Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman. [...]
"The services are ultimately responsible for naming their own military installations, and as of now, there are no current plans to change policies regarding how installations are named."
If the military is going to go around naming bases after generals of opposing armies, there's more than one war to choose from, you know.
Again, we're talking about symbols when the United States certainly has a racism problem that goes beyond symbolism. But at the same time, it is some potent symbolism that the government would honor traitors and enemy combatants, as long as racism and the cause of slavery were what made them enemies.
