The conservative mind is a troubled place, a swirling mass of contradictions and fact-free personal agendas. Take for instance Chief Justice John Roberts dissenting opinion in the Obergefell v Hodges decision handed down today granting marriage equality to all.
If you are among the many Americans -- of whatever sexual orientation -- who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today's decision. Celebrate the achievement of a desired goal. Celebrate the opportunity for a new expression of commitment to a partner. Celebrate the availability of new benefits. But do not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it.
The Constitution had nothing to do with it? What the hell did Roberts think the five justices who decided the issue were using as their guide? Instructions on how to slap together an Ikea bookcase? What the Chief Justice of the United States was churlishly saying here was "Oh sure, all you fancy-pants queers, go ahead and enjoy your victory. Just know that while you unjustly soak the government for benefits,
my constitution still finds you icky".
Whatevs. The fact remains that the Constitution had everything to do with it. It was the Constitution that guided these justices to their decision no matter what odd point Roberts thought he was making.
Congratulations to all of us. There are still more injustices to overcome, but today we have grown significantly as a nation. A nation that has demonstrated that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are not just empty words found in a dusty Declaration of Independence.
Yes, Justice Roberts, that is worthy of celebration, and so we will celebrate. There will be wild celebrations in New York, San Francisco and many other cities this weekend. Even London will be celebrating by giving the Stars and Stripes a place of honor at the beginning of their pride parade tomorrow. There will be tear-filled celebrations at courthouses as people who love one another finally sign their marriage certificates. There will be children celebrating with crayons, drawing their stick-figure families with new-found dignity. There will be folks in the wedding industry celebrating the windfall to their businesses. Many people will be celebrating and not forgetting that it was a raw document first forged in 1789 that has become a little more perfected today.
To the Constitution of the United States!
