Librarian's Comments from Mrs. Poteet:
My Students: The ASJ library has gone from a place students and teachers stayed away from 4-5 years ago to a dynamic, fun learning space. Our library isn't a place just to get books and it, definitely, isn't quiet. We are exploring, learning, and using technology. A Makerspace is the next step for our students.
Our school has a high percentage of students that are second language learners. Many of our families have a low socio-economic status. These families are transient, moving in and out with little or no notice. Our school is a safe haven for our students. They can count on having breakfast and lunch every day and they have teachers that, truly, care about them. I am always looking to find ways to provide new experiences and opportunities for our kids.
My Project: Makerspaces have popped up in many libraries over the past couple of years. Our students have experience learning through library centers. A Makerspace is a great way to extend that learning, incorporating more science and art.
Our Makerspace will be open before school for "Maker Mornings" and during the students' specials rotation in the morning. By opening our doors at 7:00, when students arrive, they will be able to start the day thinking, building, creating...getting their brains turned on and ready for the classroom!
Besides the circuitry and building materials (K'nex, Q-Ba-Maze, Zoob), other low-cost activities will be part of the Makerspace: origami, puzzles, 100 cup building challenge, and drawing supplies. Students will be able to work on their own or collaborate with other students their age and those in different grade levels.
Donating to this project will help provide students with new opportunities to build their schema/background knowledge, create, experiment, and work with others. With so much time being spent getting students ready to take a state test, much of the fun of learning has gone by the wayside. My hope is that students will develop new interests, ideas, and partnerships as they visit our Makerspace.
