I've seen a lot of stories here on Daily Kos and on other alternate news sites. From the recent ruling on Obergefell vs. Hodges to the defending of the lone-wolf terrorist in Charleston, it leads me to think that above all they want wealth concentration and White supremacy, just like the good-old-days of the Gilded Age and the Roaring '20s. All I can say is, AS IF. Think about it, what else are they demanding from young people, women, Blacks, LGBTs, etc.? Nothing, except shut up, you don't have any rights! Gee, what a non-surprise!
There's a reason behind this line, and it's aggrivatingly simple: The Southern Strategy! There's nothing more simple than the opportunity taken on by the likes of Tricky Dick and fully cemented by the Great Communicator and/or the Gipper. This isn't to make the point that all Southerners are knuckle-dragging rednecked simpletons, as most are actually very educated and fairly smart. Two such examples are Bill Clinton (Rhode's Scholar) and Allen Cliffton of Addicting Info's Right Off A Cliff blog. There's numerous other examples, but the point is that some of the loudest voices coming out of the South are those preaching White supremacy and justifying it through religion. They're also trying to turn this country into a fundamentalist Evangelical Christian theocracy, which they've been attempting since the founding of America back in 1776.
Anyway, going back to the original point, some of the worst far-right shouters are a byproduct of the Southern Strategy, helping to unleash it in the late 1960s and early 1970s and then solidifying it into the central Party aparatus in the 1980s. Much of it is a reaction to the counter-culture and also the various movements by Blacks, Women, LGBTQNs, etc., to fight for their rights and for equality under the law. Others is to the willingness to uphold White supremacism and both de facto, and in some cases de jure, segregation. Be this segregation, racial, gender, sexual-identity, class, age, religion, ability, etc., the point is anyone who was not a White and Protestant owner of property was not considered worthy of rights. By the way, this is largely bullshit, as it largely opens up various groups to convenient scapegoating for society's issues, and believe me, we have a lot of them.
Take the issue of mass-poverty, that's almost completely blamed on the Black community for not pulling their weight and instead being a bunch of welfare-kings and welfare-queens (again complete bullshit). Also look at our incarceration rate, which is the highest in the world, again blamed on Blacks for being the drug dealers and Black males in particular for being criminals and animals who we need to lock away (bullshit). There's also a reason we need the death penalty (their view, not mine), to kill these animals. Again, this is bullshit for a shitload of reasons, but the most basic of reasons is that it's ignoring the underlying cause, which is White-based policies enforcing structural racism within housing policies, some of which never changed since implemented back in the 1930s and 1940s, and within the economy itself. Various institutions, while having non-discrimination policies, largely don't follow them fully, and that's why there's a massive amount of unemployment in the Black community (Whites are more likely to get hired than Blacks for the same employment positions). As for crime itselfe, again that has to do with the exclusion of the Black community from gaining any opportunities for economic advancement for nearly a century after slavery ended. Think about it, in the South the Black middle class was destroyed after about the 1890s.
What about voting? Good question, and that's very simple to answer. Going back to the Southern Strategy, it's very clear that in order to keep the South's support, especially the more racist elements, the Republicans have been in an on-going campaign to strip people of color of their right to vote, and largely in violation of the Voting Rights Act. It's no surprise, as their primary targets are in fact Blacks, and Spanish-speaking Americans for that matter, as these groups they consider to be dangerous to the notion of White-dominance and White supremacy.
