Baby mountain goat at Hurricane Hill trail's end
The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note any observations you have made of the world around you. Snails, fish, insects, weather, meteorites, climate, birds and/or flowers. All are worthy additions to the bucket. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located.
Some wildlife encounters on our June 22 hike on Hurricane Hill.
A calm family group before the crowds arrive
There were two kids!
Mom's up too, appearing to graze but watchful.
Our observing from a safe distance (thank you zoom lens!) created a "goat jam" of hikers stopping to watch. Unfortunately, this included some clueless teens who wanted to take a selfie with the goats. What a great plan...get up close and turn your back on those horns! Maybe everyone should be a bit more careful there?
Maybe it's time to move away?
There were other babies around. This fawn was only a few feet from the trail, but most hikers walked on by without ever seeing it.
A fawn's hiding place.
But you can be sure that its mom was watching us.
When I got back to the car, I discovered that I'd developed a "photographer's blister" on my hand from the way I was holding the camera for the 220+ shots I took. That's one occupational hazard I'd never heard of before. Ouch!
Your turn! Who have you been watching and who has been watching you?
