Coca cola--poison in a bottle per Cross-Fit CEO
Okay, I admit it. Until today I had no knowledge of Cross-Fit--and now that I have that knowledge, I wish I hadn't wasted my time.
Cross-Fit's self-description
It seems that Cross-Fit, from what I gather off their internet site is devoted to healthier lifestyles. But they also seem devoted to mindless stupidity. Cross-Fit's nutritional platform
Okay, so far so good you might be tempted to say. I am not a kinesiologist (IANAK) (i.e. exercise-fitness guru) but have been told that Cross-Fit's program of exercise (not mentioning nutritional advice), has been deemed by some kinesiologists as controversial. Again, I lack the expertise (IANAK) on which to make a comment--but nutrition and diabetes are a different matter, because I do know quite a bit about diabetes, both types 1 and 2.
So, one might be tempted to think that Cross-Fit's nutritional pronouncements would be scientifically based. I.e., one might have thought that until Cross-Fit's CEO Glassman plunged his big smelly foot into his mouth, thus revealing to the world what a complete moron he is.
Then, feeling the heat, the eminent nutritional expert, CEO Glassman tried to back away from his outrageous tweet.
Glassman tried to halt an almost immediate HUGE backlash on social media, both by removing his twitter statement and by yet another pronouncement by Mr. Glassman.
Defense of Coca Cola "spoof"
Does that seem to placate the issue, or are we just getting "sugar-coated" BS from the same moron?
In the following link, Nick Jonas, pop songster and former member of the Jonas Brothers--and who is a type 1 diabetic has this to say:
Nick Jonas's reply to Cross-Fit diabetic diatribe
Although I don't know what "WODS" means, it is enough to say that Mr. Glassman suffers from SFB disease (BTW a common malady of Repuglican presidential candidates).
Type 1 diabetes makes up not 5% of US diabetics, but is twice that at 10%. It is also true that some type 1's also develop type 2. Type 1 is an autoimmune disorder, genetically predetermined, often triggered by an environmental event, most commonly infectious illness in childhood. It matters not what foods that child was fed in infancy or later childhood, the genetic code is at "fault", if we are to place blame.
Type 2 diabetes is generally due to insulin resistance, of which a prime contributor (but certainly not the only) to this disorder is excess sugar intake.
It seems from nutritional pronouncements on the company's own website, calling for "no sugar" that they are COMPLETELY ignorant of basic physiology.
What is the primary metabolite for brain function?
Almost 100% glucose--i.e. sugar. Deprive the brain of sugar at ambient temperatures (as opposed to immersion in freezing water) for 4 minutes is guaranteed to result in permanent neurological damage and even death.
Okay, okay, you get it--Glassbrain didn't. For all of his wonderful "credentials", whatever they might be, he seems abysmally ignorant of some plain physiologic facts, all of which have been known for more than 100 years.
!. All carbohydrates from simple sugars (glucose, sucrose, fructose et al.) to complex carbohydrates found in "starchy" such as pasta and potatoes have as their metabolic end product--GLUCOSE. The reason is simple--to feed the brain, evidently an organ not exercised much by Mr. Glassman. True carbohydrates can also be turned into fat, cholesterol, and to a small degree, even protein.
2. Fats, whether animal or vegetable, cis- or trans-, can be and are converted into carbohydrates. Whoa. This contributes to diabetes too. So Mr. Glassbrain, why did't you also pick on avocados, a fruit loaded with fat--just like olives--but which are known to have excellent anti-oxidant properties.
3. Protein can be and is converted to carbohydrate (and/or fat) when intake surpasses a certain threshold varying by a number of factors. During the process of food deprivation (e.g. dieting, starvation, prolonged vomiting or diarrhea etc, there comes into play a process called gluconeogenesis which is a nice medical term for the body turning other food substrates (including complex carbohydrates and protein) into glucose. So even if one eats lean meat, large amounts of it can and do contribute to type 2 diabetes.
4. Also consider environmental stressors, such as long work hours, emotional challenges (ranging from hating your job to being irritated in traffic) which result in release of glucocorticoids and epinephrine metabolites, both classes of hormones which increase the glucose load presented to the body, regardless of dietary intake.
5. Genetics: sorry if you didn't pick your parents more carefully but genetics can play a major role not only in developing type 1 diabetes but also type 2. So Mr Glassman, should we resort to eugenics as a means of cleansing our population from the scourge of diabetes?
6. Booze. Need I say more?
7. Prescription drugs: many are very toxic to the pancreas, even when taken in prescribed amounts for valid medical indications. The list of such drugs includes antipsychotic agents, certain anticonvulsants and numerous other drugs--all taken for valid indications, and even with close management.
So, Mr. Glassbrain, how is it that the majority of Coca Cola, Pepsi cola, Mountain Dew drinkers DO NOT develop type 2 diabetes? Let's have your well-reasoned, scientific explanation of this.
Drink Coke and Die! I hope the Coca Cola corporation sues you and your business for defamation--because you will lose BIG!
A word of warning to fellow Kossacks and your family members, you are literally risking your physical well-being if you choose to follow Cross-Fit's unscientific nutritional advice.
