I felt it here in Eugene, probably 25 miles from the center. Very minor rocking, heard a noise as well though that may have come from the local train yards. I heard word-of-mouth reports of minor damage east of Springfield, possibly near Walterville. Not much else to report about this quake itself.
There is a wider context, though, which is the impending Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. This minor quake was in the region under which the subducting Juan deFuca plate is locked with the over-riding North American plate. Some day, perhaps later today, perhaps thirty or forty years from now, it is expected that The Big One will hit - a magnitude 9+ megathrust earthquake that sends a 740 mile long section of the Pacific Northwest coast about 30 feet to the west and drops the coastline about 4 feet. According to the Oregon department of Emergency Management, the probability of this happening within the next 50 years is 37%.
Today's quake was a subtle reminder that preparedness is a good thing.
I'll check back for comments this afternoon. Heading out to play Eugene's Saturday Market with my band El Flowious :-)
