DK Quilt Guild: A place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too.
As a new quilter, I was unaware that one of the pitfalls of the craft is that you frequently end up with an unfinished object, a UFO. Its not that you don't want to finish it, its that there is some problem you just can't solve at the moment. All that gorgeous fabric goes into a storage container of some kind and it waits for you to return. I have been quilting about 2 years and was ashamed that there were projects on hold for quite a long time and then I learned the truth- All quilters believe in UFO's! So here is my solution to one I have.
Come on in for the long and the short of it.
This is the block I ended up making, The little center, the the black splotches was what I made in the class. I did not like them but wanted to make something with the lovely fabrics.
Last year, I took a class from Joe the Quilter, Joe Cunningham. Google him and see the amazing art he creates. For me, his quilting rather than his piecing is the most stunning part of his art. He quilts scenes and stories into his quilts. They are a wonder to behold. The class he taught at our guild was called "Rock the Block". You sewed strips of various widths together, cut them into blocks a prescribed widths, sewed them back together to make 6 in blocks that you sewed into a long strip and cut and sewed again. My brain called it "Slash and burn" and I was totally lost on the concept. All I knew was i had a few yards of stunning fabric and I was not going to let it go. Joe was a great teacher, he had lots of energy and excitement, and his ideas were fresh and interesting. I was not up to the level to achieve what he offered but now I think I can go on. So I came back to the mess last week. This is how I decided to save the project and get blocks I can work with. This is the quilt top I made.
It is odd but I like it for the bold blues, the cool leafy green, and the cute bugs on the leaves, which don't show up as well as I would have liked. But you get the idea.

We NEED diarists! Your diary can be elaborate and full of photos, a simple story of your own quilting history or that of someone you love, a discussion of a current project or a technique you're learning, new adventures... You could post quilt retreat-day recipes (things like crockpot meals, so food appears without much attention from you)...
We could do show and tell or open thread, also, but either way, we need diarists to host. It is EASY if you're willing to take the chance.
