U.N. Security Council votes to endorse Iran nuclear deal Monday in New York.
In spite of all the time and space given to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's objections to the Iran nuclear deal, the United Nation's Security Council endorsed it by unanimous vote Monday. The deal will allow crushing economic sanctions imposed on Iran to be lifted as Iran meets a series of benchmarks that will
substantially reduce its stockpile of enriched uranium and centrifuges and allows for routine inspections laid out in the terms of the agreement.
Edith Lederer reports:
The resolution had been agreed to by the five veto-wielding council members, who along with Germany negotiated the nuclear deal with Iran. It was co-sponsored by all 15 members of the Security Council.
Under the agreement, Iran's nuclear program will be curbed for a decade in exchange for potentially hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of relief from international sanctions. Many key penalties on the Iranian economy, such as those related to the energy and financial sectors, could be lifted by the end of the year.
